My only advice is that you get a manual for your specific model and year. The manual will tell you all the jobs you'll have to do for the mileage service and the amounts of fluids, torques and tools you need. It's necessary if you want to do yourself the job.
The normal service is very easy to do yourself if you have a little habilities and some few tools.
Hey man. Just had 1000 service done. I put amsoil 20W50 in engine / primary. Redline shockproof in tranny. K/N oil filter. What a differnce that stuff made . Runs alot cooler and quiter. But there is alot of advice out there. Go with what you feel comfy with. Very happy with what fluids i choose.
You should know Harley's recomendation since it is in the user manual that came with the bike. With the synthetic oil's areable to handle hotter temps then a Dyno oil, I recomend running a full synthetic in the engine. Due to the temps a air cooled engine can/will see. I personaly run Mobil 1 in the engine and the recomended HD oils in the tranny and primary.
Syn is the way to go, especially on the '07s due to the heat. I run the recommended HD syn in the primary, but use Mobil 1 V-twin 20-50 in the engine and Redline Shockproof in the trans. Trans ***** great and is quiet, and the engine oil helps with the heat. Definately go syn, brand of your choice.
Thanks for the replies, I will defintely go synthetic on the engine oil and check into the Red Line Shock Proof, is it avialbel online to order? yea I know I need a service manual and will get that too. This is my First Harley and I want to do it right. Been working on Honda's for many years mostly the XL singles. I know the HD's are different and as I said just wana do it right! and care for my 2007 FXDC the bext I can.
You don't need a shop manual to change the oil, all the info you need is in the owners manual. In fact if you have the tools you can do most of the break in service yourself, it's all in there page 171.
