The gauge on my 004 wide glide is erratic. When I fill up it stays on empty and the low fuel light stays on. After I ride it awhile it will gradually come up to about 3/4 at most and the low fuel light goes off. Next fill up, same. What are the components in the system and how do you trouble shoot?

Not sure if the injected '04 differs from my carbed '99 but on mine there are only two components...the float assembly and gauge itself.
IIRC, there is a troubleshooting section in the FSM that lists the resistance values for the variable resistor on the float assembly. I never tried to crack open my old gauge since it looked like a major PIA.
As mentioned above, check the fuel level sensor float. You can see it through the gas cap. If the float is stuck on the bottom of the tank get a coat hanger and bend the end of the hanger into a little hook to pull up on the float lever. My float got stuck a couple of times when I ran it pretty low on fuel, float bottomed out and stuck on the inner edge of the tank.
