I do have one final question. Any idea what I can expect to spend on the work you described? I’m taking it to an Indeoendet shop that’s been highly recommended. Would like to have idea so I don’t feel like I’m getting completely hosed.

Exactly bass-ackwards. The higher the gear, the more it'll slip if something's wrong with it.

Dropped it off at the shop today. Guy said it probably has a bent clutch fork and most likely a bad gear. Probably $1000 to fix it.

"Paging Mark@Baker transmission to the white courtesy phone please!"

Really, PM him with your situation as his products seem to stand up to use/abuse.

Let us know how that goes and what the issue was. I always like to 'calibrate' my diagnosis for a given problem.

I had a 2000 Sporty that would do that.
Turned out to be a bad 1st gear.
Can't remember if it was the mainshaft 1st gear or the countershaft gear.
Also can't remember what it cost me but I remember the bill was about 80% labor. I'm thinking it was around $600, but that was about 14 years ago.

Yeah I’ve watched some YouTube stuff just to see if it was something I thought I could handle myself. There’s a lot of labor involved.
