Hello.
Bike is 2013 fxdbp
Bike was at Harley getting some goodies installed. Upon trying to pick it up it wouldn't start. Harley went to check the battery. Upon pulling off the left hand side panel to remove the maxi fuse to the alarm. We found a surprise. The wiring harness was chewed up. I didnt get to look really close but does anyone if this is a short harness or the whole bike. Just getting a idea what I'm looking at for repair. So much for rodent proof tape .
I didnt grab a photo when I was there and unfortunately it wasnt when they had it. When I took it to them I couldn't start it figured my tender went bad and battery was dead.
You will probably have to replace the entire harness. If you're going to do it yourself it isn't all that difficult. It can be done in an afternoon. You can probably find a harness on ebay or buy a lot cheaper than a new one from Harley. I bought a used harness in excellent shape for my '06 Dyna on ebay for $89.00. Removing the old one and installing the new one took me about 3 hours.
It's unbelievable the amount of damage those things can do. I have an old Chevrolet truck that needs a new engine and it's been sitting for about a year. This weekend I went out to get something out of the truck and noticed a rat has chewed the entire wiring harness going to the passenger side door in half! I don't get it. Wires can't possibly taste that good. I never realized they could do so much damage.
Its terrible I haven't really been ready to have the bike. Once I got to Harley to pick it up I was 100% ready to have it home. Can't explain how devastated I was when I seen it. Especially when I already forked over a nice chunk of change. I left it with them to fix as I haven't really had a day off from work in so long and there is much for me to get caught up on . It's been the worst year for it. My old 86 I have parked out back which has sat for years at a time was the first winter it has been bothered. Opened the door to complete mess and smell.
Same thing happened to me with my 14 Fat Bob. All three connections at the ECM were chewed. The harness is one piece. 425 for the harness and god only knows how much the dealer will charge you. None of my wires were broken, just the insulation was chewed and copper exposed. I went out and bought a bottle of Liquid Tape. and painted the chewed wires. No problems since. A sock with moth ***** keeps the rodents away.
