I drove my motorcycle all day yesterday without any problem. Las nigjt I parked the bike in the street for the first time. ( don't worry I have two disc locks).
This morning when I tried to start tje bike, gasoline was comin out of the pipes. Never happened before. Just like if gasoline had been flooding the cylinders during the night. I changed the oil and filter, heavily contaminated by fuel and took a ride in the neighbourhood. Checked the oil: fine. No black smoke, everything fine. Has somebody flooded the carb by turning again and again the throttle or is there a mechanical problem I can't figure out ?
Last year I have adjusted the float and replaced the needle. This year I replaced the carb vacuum hose to the petcock. It is very strange that such a problem occurs suddenly and disappears magically !
What do you think ?
Float probably got stuck or had a speck of dirt in the seat. Change your fuel filter, replace the petcock with a manual one (Pingle) and plug the vacuum line. Remember to turn it off when you park it. Vacuum petcocks are problematic by nature and prone to failure. **** can it and your problem will go away.
Joe40x is right on target with what I'd say regarding the source of the problem. I'll add this, if it was indeed the problem, I'd repair it and change the oil asap without running it further.
My ride is a carbed 2002 Dyna sper glide FXD.
Are manual petcocks available from HD dealers or only at aftermarket dealers like JP cycle ?
Where do you guys buy your aftermarket parts ?
Sorry for asking that many questions, I'm learning to know and fix my motorcycle properly. It is my first HD. Always drove Triumph and jap before, thnx.
The accelerator pump squirts fuel into the throat of the carb and that extra fuel will eventually dribble down into the cylinders. If you have the stock petcock on the bike they are opened by vacuum from the carb. Must have had curious hands revving the engine for you during the night. This won't happen on fuel injection bikes.
Found a brand new petcock (no vacuum) for 29$ can. Already installed. The old one had its threads damaged and prob the diaphragm as well. I gotta change oil and filter for the second time cause contaminated once again. B4 re starting the bike I ll open up the carb looking for debris and making sure the needle operates properly. That will be tomorrow.
Replaced old petcock, , plugged the vacuum on carb,
Opened carb bottom end and inspected float and needle, gave a shot of carb cleaner to the jets, installed a fuel line Fram universal filter at the outlet pf the new petcock, chamged oil and filter.
Test ok. Runs great.
Waiting for new issue !
Thnx.
Jack
