Default Fxdl ignition failure... again

2014 FXDL
So I've been fighting an on going battle with my ignition. All started a few years ago bike power would shut off while riding but if you moved the ignition switch around it would come back on. Dealer replaced ignition. Same problem came back 2 more times, ignitions replaced each time. Then the ignition housing broke and was replaced. Then dealer called to say there was a recall so I had that done and ignition replaced again.

Finally seemed to be fixed for about 2 years, then on the way home from bike week ignition failed again. Bike still runs but ignition is hanging by the wire. I'm going to try to talk to the dealer and maybe harley corporate and see if I can get this fixed even though warranty is out since it's been ongoing. If not maybe I'll ditch the low rider console and go with a street Bob console with ignition mounted in top. Anyone ever done this swap and know what's involved?

I don’t know if this can be done but I will suggest it anyway..... The 99-2005 dyna’s had the switch between the rear fender and battery mounted too the frame just under the seat on the right side. Maybe relocating too this area might have less effect from vibration on your switch? But like I said I don’t know if this can be done on the later Dyna.....

It's worth looking into, thanks for the suggestion!

Here's my thought. If you replace this bracket again, I would replace the self tapping screws with a small threaded screw, washer then a washer and a self locking nut. IMHO the sheet metal being used might be creating molecular stress cracks and the vibrations are causing a failure due to the hidden cracks. I'm not a metal structural engineer but two failures is leading me this.

I have the same bike. My switch is busted right now too. The thumb lever part fell ooff so I have to turn the center barrel. some times I can do it with my fingers but I have to carry pliers to turn the ignition off/on. This is my second ignition also.

My 06 was my favorite. The key was in the neck of the frame where the fork lock is. SO you can turn your bike off and lock it in one motion. Of coarse now that I think about it the switch failed too!

Just to clear up my wording," the sheet metal screw being used..."

That's just wrong... There is a major compromise to the strength where the screws are, and having the switch cantilevered out like that makes it prone to flexing and vibration. Instead of the screws, it should clamp around the bracket, and the center of gravity of the switch should be as close to the plane of the bracket as practical. Then it would be a lot stronger and vibrate a lot less.

it vibrates a bunch right there. I have reached down and felt it going down the road and am surprised by how much it vibrates. Really I cant believe they last as long as they do. much better on the tank or frame
