Swingarm Pivot bolt install??
Simple question hopefully and also my first post. Bare with me.
2012 FXDB. Bike had minor fender bender and bent front upper fork tubes. Replaced those. Doing a good once over on the bike and changed out both engine mounts and have removed and replaced swingarm bushings/bearing and dust cap. Pivot bolt had some pretty heavy rust and pitting on it so I tossed it. That was a f$&k up. There was only 1 left in Canada!! I managed to find it and itll be here mid next week. That being said, Id like to make some progress on this bike so when the bolt shows up I can just reassemble the azz end and get this thing off my lift. It came out pretty decent though. Used a drift and a dead blow hammer. 4 or 5 good smacks and out it came.
Question......Can i install the inner primary and put the primary guts all back together before putting the swingarn/pivot shaft bolt back on so long as I put the belt on and let it hang out for a while? Am I missing something?
Yes I read the manual. Yes I googled it and I even asked a friend. Nobody seemed to have a definitive answer. I cant see why not but would like to be certain. Id love to keep going. Thanks. Ive been watching in here a while. Killer group here boys and girls. An amazing resource. .
Just a quick FYI also, Harley told me the pivot bolt is 3/4 - 10 X 9 1/4 long. I bought a 3/4-10 X 10 with anticipation of using a lathe to remove 3/4 of length. However, a grade 8 hex bolt from my local heavy duty hardware shop (and anywhere he told me) is the wrong OD!! The ones you get from the hardware store are 12 thousandths smaller than the Harley one which would cause issues. Fastenal makes the exact ones but I was told they are on contract with Harley and can NOT sell that bolt to the public. Brutal. Moco strikes again!! Just like the damn clutch hub bearing. Ugh. Lol. Have a great weekend all.
