So to give you an idea of what i found out on my fuel guage. It was leaking at the bottom of the tank a tiny amount so i pull up the guage good thing i did there were exposed wires sitting in gas. So i remove the guage and wires pull them through the bottom, i unscrewed all the torque bolts and cleaned it up removed all wires except the two on top of the unit. Here is my question i reinstalled the bolts and it doesn't seem to leak for now. can i take the wires off the top of the unit or is that how its powered? Are thes wires just the signal wires for the gauge? I also ordered the delete gasket and plate will be installing that once it comes. Thanks guys.

 

The exposed wires to the variable wiper resistor in the tank is normal.

You need 12v going thru it to function.

The above may not apply if the bike is newer and has a different sensor type. I've never worked on a modern fuel level system.

 

Its a 94 wide glide. They had the ground soldered to the ground for the fuel guage and the positive soldered as well then they left it exposed. I replaced the positive and ground wires coming from under the tank back through the little tube then back behind where the fuel gauge sits. My question is do i now need to attach these back onto the top of the sending unit? Basically i removed the guage and now do i need to replace the positive and negative wires onto the bolts coming from the top of the sending unit?...

 

Yes. The power for the sender daisy chains thru the gauge.

 

So theoretically i can just run the positive and ground riggt to the unit bypassing the gauge?

 

I believe so. Not sure if the sender grounds thru the tank mount or thru the wiring. Why would you want a sender with no gauge, tho? Lose either and you may as well just use a dip stick or sight glass.

 

The gauge is fried i need a new one and the wiring was shotty so i redid the wiring im gonna replace the gauge but its a online deal.... i believe power is center post and ground is outer?..

 

Don't need either to ride. No biggie taping them off until you get a new gauge ($$$, I know...). Unfortunately I can't remember which post is which and I'm away from my books and bike. Sorry.
