Bought a set of R6 radial calipers that the former owner had converted to DOT5. I'm running DOT4 on my Dyna. Thought I could just flush the calipers with denatured alcohol & then DOT4, but I've read sources that say switching from 5 to 4 could be a disaster. Of course several sources say I should rebuild just to be safe.
The calipers are off a 2017 and rebuild kits are limited & pricey. Basically waiting for the rebuild kit would take my bike outta commission for two weeks. Also for the price of the rebuild kit (about $75) I could buy rebuilt calipers for not that much more. But I've already bought these. SO that being said, looks like I have the following options:
Option 1: flush calipers with denatured alcohol & DOT4, bleed and hope for the best.
Option 2: flush entire system with denatured alcohol and convert to DOT5 (seems I would not need to rebuild the master to convert from 4 to 5)
Option 3: rebuild calipers
Option 4: buy new calipers
Option 1 will probably work. If you're skeptical, or ****, take the pistons out of the housings, split the housings if applicable, and clean everything with alcohol. Reassemble with red rubber grease. Install and use DOT 4 (or whatever is in your master now.)
It's not the ideal course, but if it's in good shape it should be fine. It's pretty new, so I'd expect it to be OK. Just be careful not to nick anything.
