Hey all, I’ve seen a few posts about using appliance epoxy to black out different parts but I haven’t seen much about using it on chrome. Does it work pretty well? Also should I prep it the same? 220 grit and metal etching primer?
It works fine on solid (not peeling/flaking), scuffed chrome.
Scuff to 220-320, but chrome is pretty tough. Be patient and meticulous.
Etching primer, yes.
Depending on desired finish, you may also want to add a sanding primer stage with additional sanding refinement to 600 grit.
As always, prep is key. Remove all wax/grease/oil prior to first sanding (to keep it from getting ground into the underlying metal) then remove all dust and hand oils prior to each paint layer.
Rattle can epoxy takes a long time to cure. Allow a week at room temp before installing.
I just did my lowers yesterday. I had one 20yr old cruddy and one brand new lower. I used 220 grit and knocked both down til all the factory clear was gone, tedious but you have to get all the nooks and crannies. Masked off the tubes and cleaned everything with alcohol (and drank a little alcohol) I read an older thread on here about having exactly 30 minutes to do all your coats before the paint set up too much so I set myself a timer. I did 5 light coats over 30 mins and let em sit in the house all night. Now, I cannot paint a damn fingernail so my paint projects usually turn out horrific but I’m actually super stoked on how these look. Pics don’t do justice in the garage so I’ll take some outside later on. Give yourself plenty of prep time, work super clean and this paint is pretty forgiving if you just do light coats. It’s heavier than normal paint so it’ll run quick if you shoot it on too heavy.
