Im thinking about buying this 2005 dyna low rider EFI. It has 11000 miles and is very clean (apart from the exhaust ).
it rides very well.
Ive got a few questions though....
- the colour scheme on the tank, was this factory or possibly done by previous owners?
- it Has thunderheader exhaust, SE heavy breather and EFI adjusted. How moch will the bike gain in HP, torque or driveability?
- chain tensioner i think is still standard
- Any other things to watch for?

- Any other things to watch for? Cam chain tensioner is the major one, with a 15 year old bike any rubber hoses or seals might be questionable depending on how the bike was stored. Also neck bearings, swing arm bearing, and motor mounts should be inspected and/or serviced if not done previously.
Yeah, paint scheme looks "redone" Possible reason? when the bike is laid over the handlebar mounted signals dent the tank.
The front motor mounts have issues supposedly. Make sure tires have been changed,if not they are 15 years old. They are good bikes, when the time comes do the cam tensioner upgrade, they may still last 20 K miles yet. I think its a 30K service item but not sure.
You have a chain tensioner on the drive train chain? Not standard, the 2005 FXDLI is belt drive. If chain, quite possible it's not stock engine either.

I was taking that OP meant "Cam chain tensioner?" as in spring loaded and needing the Screaming Eagle hydraulic tensioner upgrade.
Thought 05 was still carburetored?
As everyone else has already said pop the cam chest and look at those tensioners... I highly recommend gears for replacement, but others like hydrolics... Either way it is a win..
Also welcome to the bike of never ending projects...
But you will have fun..
Check with a dealer and see if they can find by VIN if the valve guide seals were changed out. Some bad ones made it through engine production causing oil consumption. If you start going through oil check your plugs for oil deposits, had my 2005 FXDLI done with 950 miles on it, MOCO paid for it.

Can't recall ever seeing one with that color scheme and i bought a 2005 Dyna so i did a lot of studying the different Dynas in 2004-2005. Can't see the whole pipe but that doesn't look like a Thunderheader. All the Dyna Thunderheaders i've seen have the rear pipe sweeping around in front of the cam cover. That was like the "trademark" of the Thunderheader and the White Brothers E Pipe(i have one). The headers look like a Supertrapp. The cam chain tensioners need to be changed or upgraded because of age. They will fail shortly.

I must be blind. I just noticed there is no gas tank decal. All of them from that year had a decal of some sort and the FXDX had a silk screened logo that can't be replaced unless you buy the whole tank from HD. I had a very clever painter save the silk screen logo and fix the dent when he repainted the bike. If a bike has been repainted and it's not some kind of custom bike it might make you wonder why. Oh by the way that seat on there(stock FXDL) is about one of the most comfortable seats they ever put on a Dyna.

Okay i'm officially blind. I just noticed there is a logo on the tank you just can't see it very well. It looks like one of the silk screened logos. Maybe someone just added the black to a red bike to make it a two tone.
