has anyone changed their rear tire yet? I am ready at 9800 and started to tonite. Only problem is i cant get the axel to slide out. I followed along with the service manual and asked all my friends but no avail. Any suggestions would be very appreciated. Oh yea Im ridin an 06 lowrider. Thanx
Seems most people including myself had a tough time with the axle. I had to beat the snot out of mine to get it out. I had some one turning the axle with a rachet while I beat the living **** out of it. It came out. Harley apparently never greased the axles. Good luck!
You need to use a rubber hammer, or have some sort of buffer between the hammer and the axle. Once you get it out, dress it good with steel wool and use a good anit sieze when going back.
Thanks guys! I broke down and took it to the stealer for 362.00. I was hesitant to wail on my new bike with a sledge but i did try the mallet and a block of wood and framing hammer. The mechanic told me the same that it takes quite a bit to remove it. Will definitely do it next time armed with more info and bigger hammer;-].[sm=crossbonesgif.gif]
Seized axles are common. I have an indy buddy that is the original owner of an '03 Springer. I was at his shop last week. He had been trying to beat the front axle out of his bike for 2 days. A rubber mallet certainly wasn't gonna cut it in his case.
At 5000 when I was checking the belt tension I thought I would just see how snug the axle was on my bike. I pulled the nut off and tried to turn it by hand, then tapped it with a brass hammer with the nut on, then put a block of wood and wailed at it with a steel sledge and it didn't budge. When I got my new tire at 9800 I took it to the dealer and stood outside the service area and snickered as I listened to three guys workig at pounding away for about 15 minutes trying to get that axle out. $65 to remove my rear wheel, change my rear tire that I supplied, balance the wheel and tire and replace the rear wheel.
If you can't get the axle out, you probably don't need to be changing the tire - cuz that can be a real struggle. Beware HD authorized dealerships: too many times I've had to fix what they did wrong. Always check their work.
