When my ride is cold in the morning it starts really quick with no issues. Later in the day after the motr is hot and been running it is harder to start. Not to the point I think there is a major issue. Just to the point I need to ask if this is normal.
Once in the ~1k miles I've ridden my bike so far (I ride it just about every day), I've had an issue with hard starting. That was after a 15 minute ride, shut her off for about a minute, then started up again. Took me a few 5 second presses on the start button to get her started again.
Other than that one time, my sled starts up almost immediately after hitting the start button.
I've noticed the same thing with my 07 Wide Glide. Not sure of what might cause it. I'll ride for a while, stop for gas or something and notice that it'll start hard. I've just gotten used to it now I suppose.
Worst was while on a trip, we stopped for gas, filed up and then went to start it back up and it just cranked for a while, sounded weird too. Turned everything off and back on again, waited again for the fuel ignition light to go off, then it just started up ok.
The amount of 'cranking fuel' the injectors spit out when you start the bike isbased on engine temperature. This is one of the things you can change with the SE race tuner. There's a table where you can set injector pulse width in milliseconds at temperatures ranging from 0° C to 160° C (some maps have a different temperature range). Thus, your bike can start finewhen the engine temp is32° C (90° F) but terrible at 48° C (118° F), etc.
I'm trying to attach a screen shot of the race tuner table and graph of injector pulse width vs temp, but I guess I'm not allowed to do that today!
I have the same problem with my 07 WG. However, a few weeks ago I put on a set of V & H Big Shots and SE air cleaner which meant installing the V & H Fuel Pak. Now when I stop for gas and then go to restart, it fires right up. So, murphdog is on the money since the Fuel Pak tends toward a richer mixture than the stock setup.
I have noticed the same thing. I have done a few mods to my bike to include the Stage 1 upgrade. I was thinking that it was due to my work, not the nature of the '07 WG. Something that I noticed is when the bike won't turn over right away I am in first gear. I put her in neutral, hit the button and she fires right up. Weird.
I also have had issues with the positive terminal coming loose on the battery. While I was at the dealer, I mentioned it to one of the techs. He stated that there is a problem with the washers on the terminals (you know, the ones with the little groves or teeth on it). He said that when you tighten it, those teeth grab the terminal and the whole wire is torqued to the right. While riding the natural position for that wire is level and the vibration will allow it to move back to normal position, thus loosening the terminal. I took his word and using wirecutters, cut that washer off both the positive and negative terminals and retightened them. This was a month ago and not a problem since. Also the bike fires up in any gear right away. May be totally unrelated to the issue you are having, but I figured that it was worth mentioning.
