I have had two custom paint jobs on bikes and I have to say you get what you pay for in the long run. I paid $1200 for a simple two tone job plus paint and $1500 for a detailed flame job plus paint using candy colors. My advice check out some local bikes that have been sprayed in your area then go see the painter you like to check out his work in person. But don't go cheap on the paint either you will regret it.
I have to agree with moondog A really great custom paintjob will run between $1200 and $2000, depending on what exactly is being done. If you are looking for just one or two colors, and no graphics, I would say close to the $700 to $1000 range.

A simple two-tone should run from $600 and up. Depends on the colors used, some colors are pretty expensive, and candies require more coats than an average job increasing labor as well. Also the seperation pinstripes could run the price up. DO NOT let your painter use pinstriping tape, make sure the pinstipes are painted on. And yes, a two-tone requires at least one seperation stripe to make the two-tone pop. Average price at my shop is around $850 for a stock appearing two-tone paint job, something like this

One more thing..............make sure your guy has painted bikes before, and check out some of his work first.
Good luck, and post pics of what you have done!

Wow, those are pretty reasonable estimates. I paid $2000 for my paint job, now I think I got ripped off. Its hard to find a really good honest painter.
