I'm in the market for a Dyna, I've had a Nightster and currently have a Fatboy Lo, and potentially going to be living in another country for part of the year so wanted to export one there to have as transportation. I personally preferred HD's black out (non chrome) models, but are there any years I should necessarily worry about in regards to Dyna? For instance, I know the earlier softail models had some cam chain issues, and after a certain year sportsters went to canbus (not exactly an issue, but just something to be aware of, an actual issue would probably be Nightster ECM is fender mounted which other models aren't, which leaves a huge hole there if you decide to relocate).
So what should I be looking for? filtering out? a must?
'05 and older have the problematic spring tensioners on the timing chains. Not an unsolvable problem, but you need to be aware of them.
'06 models have significant changes from the older bikes. They have a few unique and well know issues. Again, not unsolvable, but may need to be addressed if the previous owner hasn't already
'07+ are generally considered fairly reliable
For a couple years now I've been very interested in the 2014 Dyna line with the 103's... I would really love to hear about them as well They must go like a banshee for a stock bike. They should also have the upgraded compensator.. I've seen them now for under 10 close to 9 on the market with low miles..
