Default Help identifying Dyna front end

Hey all,

My 1973 XLCH came to me with the front end of an unknown model Dyna. Clearance between forks is about 5 1/4" so I'm assuming it is not a wide glide.

The last part of this project is to replace the front 9 spoke mag wheel with a 21" spoke front wheel to match the rear wheel. Sounds simple, but has started turning into a nightmare trying to find a wheel that I can run with little machining or other modification. Was considering even lacing my own star hub with a 21" rim but lining up the disc brake rotor with the mounted caliper is not a road I want to go down.

Can anyone help me identify what model Dyna the front end came from? Best case scenario, I'd like to find a 21" spoked wheel that was made for the specific Dyna model the forks are from. Then just swap the wheels out and carry on. Worst case scenario find a hub meant for this model and lace a 21" rim myself. Can provide more measurements or pics if needed.

Thanks in advance. Adam

It's definitely pre-'06.

Thanks, Reindeer.

Is there a model code for mid-glide or narrow glide, like FXDWG for wide glide? That might help me narrow down the search as well.

Also wondering if narrow glide and mid glide are actually two separate models. Could someone shed any light on that?

That is a 39mm Narrow Glide, used on Dyna's and Sportsters. Since it has 4 piston caliper, 2000 and up. Since someone else said per-06, there is your range. 21" wheels on the Bay should be easy enough to find with a little patience. No reason to go all machining things, that wheel should be an easy score, though most likely spokes. Do not recall a 21" mag wheel. Spoke 21" wheel form a Sportster Custom (I think that is what they called it) is what you are looking for, good luck.

Something like this, but hopefully in better condition:

Mid Glide was used on Dynas (other than Wide Glides, of course) on the '06 and newer models. They had 49mm diameter fork tubes. The older ones were narrow glides, and had smaller diameter (39mm or 41mm?) tubes. As Architect suggested above, I think the Dyna and Sportster front ends from that era were the same, but I'm not 100% sure of that.

Winnah!!!!!! Sportster custom = XL1200C (sorry, not sure about the 883's)

EDIT: I'm pretty sure that 2010 was the last year for the 21" on the front of the sportster custom. after that they went to a 16" mag type wheel.

Was back on the forums and wanted to close the loop on this one-- thanks guys! Picked up a wheel and got the existing spacers machined for a perfect fit.
