2009 fxdci- every morning the bike starts up great for my commute. Every night the bike starts up great for my ride home. But... if I stop to get gas on the way to work it gives me trouble starting up. It does not want to turn over and takes a few pushes of the switch...
Thanks for any tips in advance.
First thought would be battery is getting weak. Cranking compression goes up with heat making it harder for the motor to turn over. Check you battery cables first. Clean and tight.
Mine does that near end of battery life and when cables are loose. Pull up and it's hot and that last charge is going in and you turn it off. It vaporizes and the piston hits a brick wall with not a lot of cranking amp reserve. It often will bang start. The part boys love to tell you it's compensators and starter sprag clutch.
Put you meter on the maintenance leads and watch it next time. If it drops b4elow 9.6 volts DC, put a battery in it. These bikes are a real bitch to push and and you do not want to jump them except in an emergency.
Probably won't hurt anything but if your battery is really bad, jumping and running it just may damage alternator and regulator. Then a 120 to 150 bill just went to 700.
