i took off the carb from a 2001 wide glide and cleaned it and replace everything that was bad , bike ran great for about 2 week then i was on the highway getting up to about 70 75 and it all started backfiring , suttering , no acceleration , and the the motor would die , pulled over turn key off and then back on and it start right up , then try to acceleration again and it would loss power and die again , like it wasnt getting any gas , but it is getting gas . so i read that the map sensor might be bad so i took a chance and got a new one . i call harley to see if they had one in stock and of course they didnt , but the harley parts guy told me that the oem map sensor is the same one that cars use , so i stop at the auto parts store and show him the sensor and he look it up and they had it , so i put it on and now it runs good until wide open throttle , at WOT the motor dies and when i come to a stop with the key still on , it wont start and when i turn the key off and back on and it starts right up . then it will run find until WOT and die , any ideas ?
Model and year of bike would be nice. I can think of two possibilities, both fairly easy 1) check the vent in your gas cap make sure it's not plugged. 2) The crank position sensor may be going bad.
If the bike ran great after you rebuilt the carb, I would suspect you have a fuel problem from the tank to the carb, or obstruction in the carb.
Have you checked the fuel shutoff valve, the filter in the valve, fuel hoses and fuel filter for obstructions? If everything is good from the tank to the carb, then I would pull off the carb and take it back apart, clean it real good and try it again. Try the easiest things first...
I had a similar problem years ago on an old Sportster. I rebuilt the carb, replaced the filter and fuel lines and still was hard to start, backfired, and no wide open throttle. Come to find out, the rear plug wire ran under the fuel tank and was smashed flat.
