I’m new to owning a HD but not to riding. Been riding for about 18 years now all on metrics(Honda, Yamaha). I have run across a lot of threads on other platforms and there seems to be a lot of hate for the FXDWG. Is it all in good fun or is there something I should know about my new to me HD?
As for ‘hate’ towards the WG, it’s a different ride than most of the dyna family. Not what everyone is looking for. They are iconic and have a lot of strong points.
There is always the rivalry of different era Wide Glide owners, those of us with the older models think the new WG should have been named something else, and those from the EVO era think the same of the FXD bikes, but the Wide Glide is the best of the breed in my opinion, of course I do have a soft spot for Low Riders too having owned a couple of them as well.
I absolutely love this bike. Runs and sounds amazing. Plenty of go and looks great. Seems like an all round good cruiser. I don’t “race” it. Just ride it. I enjoy the serenity of the ride.
It's gotta be one of the best looking Dynas, along with the Street Bob and Low Rider, but it's not for everyone. I was so impressed by the test ride that I bought one last summer on a whim. Then I hated it. Then I liked it. Then I put up for sale. Then I started buying parts for it. Now I'm riding it. What is weird is the 2010+ generation with the low bars and chopped fender. The classic Wide Glide is the best looking Harley ever I think but the newer one is definitely unique. Very hard to find parts and add-ons for it. I'm wishing hard for some beautiful apes, windshield, and floorboards but that's a few grand I don't want to spend. Over all it's a sweet ride and has great power but I wouldn't do it again. If it's the original Dyna or FX wide glide then yeah, but not the newer one. Here's mine --
IMO best looking Harley model. If I was buying a HD on looks the WG would be my weapon of choice.
Only reason I have never owned one is I tend towards the wider front wheel options that ride better for me on the rough roads around my parts. I found the narrow front wanting to follow every crack and seam in the roads and be quite disconcerting hitting the big potholes we have. Otherwise I would own one. Enjoy your bike and ride it like you stole it 🥇
I test drove a new Evo WG and FXR in 85 when shopping for my first HD. Only reason I bought the FXR was because of the additional legroom on the highway pegs of the FXR, that I quickly changed to forward controls.
That said, one of the techs at the bike shop in Simpsonville SC had a red wide glide shovel that was hands down the best looking bike I had ever seen. It was just perfect.
