I used to call bikes like this " Bar Hoppers" or " Stop-light to stop-light cruisers". It's not designed to be a "café racer", so I can understand the hate coming from those who never took the time to climb the learning curve to make these corner. First time on my WG, I hated it! Took a while to learn how, but now I carve like I used to on my Rice Burners. I don't ride my Wide Glide for distant travel (tho I do have accessories to make that doable). Something about this bike makes me feel like a "Badass", even at low speeds . She's a troublemaker!
I see a lot of wide glide hate too on facebook. I think it's mostly younger dudes trying to distance themselves from what they perceive as boomer/old guy bikes. I have some younger friends and they will replace perfectly good (and cool looking imo) parts because "it's old guy ****".
For the record I like wide glides and I am half-way to being an old guy myself.
I was 23 when I got my FXDWG, now I'm 50, and still riding the same bike. Not sure if that make it a young guy bike or an old man bike. It was a choice between the Wide Glide and the Softail Custom when I was looking. I loved the 21" wheel and wide forks, but the Softail looks like something is missing without the rear shocks.
In 27 years, I still haven't found a bike I would trade it for. Love the way it rides, fits me perfect,
The first picture was the day I brought it home Dec 13, '93, the second is 27 years to the day later.
