I'll be cruising down the road at a steady speed, and the speedometer needle will go to 0 and back up to the speed within a second, and at the same time the high beam will flash on and back off. Any idea what could be the issue(s)? The bikes a 99 WG.
Either way, whenever two seemingly unrelated systems act up in concert, always suspect a bad ground.
It's the actual high beam head light. I was driving one night with the low beam on and the high beam came on on its own, so I instinctively glanced down at the cluster to check if the indicator showed it being on, and no indicator light but the needle was down and went back up.
Several times after that I've noticed the needle go down, but not sure about the high beam since those times were during the day.
Is it safe to assume the speedometer is electronic, not mechanical, cable driven? What happens to the speedometer if you turn the high beam on intentionally?

Yes, the speedometer is electronic. I intentionally turned on the high beam today and it didn't do anything to the speedometer. I didn't notice any glitches at all today while riding.
Review the wiring end connector for headlight to see if it is melted.
Confirm what type of of headlight and bulb is installed in the unit.
That will help to possibly isolate problem and confirm that wires or connector are not melted near bulb.
Test charging system at battery post with a digital voltage meter while bike is at rest, while cranking and at high idle.
Rev bike multiple times and maintain a high idle.
That will help to possibly isolate problem and confirm if there is a voltage regulator problem or the wiring of voltage regulator since that might be causing an over voltage or under voltage situation.
I would review all 4 FOUR ends of battery cables too. A loose ground could be part of a multi-symptom problem symptom.
Review the key switch, consider bypass of key switch in order to confirm operation of key switch.
Reason: A bad key switch could present as a similar symptom.
Review speed sensor for metal debris at the end of sensor as it could be a multiple problem situation.

Okay. Today I rode 15 miles and the speedometer needle went down and up about 3 or 4 times in 3 miles, along with the engine light flashing a couple times. I'll do some checking.
