Default Tank removal?

Putting new bars on my 07 Street Bob ( Burly Classics ). I,m going to run the wiring internally through the bars, was told there is a wiring plug under the tank to dismantleto enable the wires to run through the bars. Do you have to drain the tank and remove to get at the plug? I,m currently waiting for the workshop manuel to arrive but want to get started. Any tips / advice most welcome. Cheers guys.

From what I have been told the wires are located under the backbone. As you look up at the front of the tank you will see a plastic cover on the bottom of the backbone that keeps the wires tucked in. It is right near the down tubes.

Removing the tank is not that hard. Try to have it as close to empty.
1. Remove the fuel pump fuse and start the bike, this removes the pressure built up in the fuel feed line to the injectors. Remove the quick disconnect fuel line on the left side next to the horn.
2. Remove the front bolt for the tank and slowly lift to get to the fuel gauge wires and disconnect.
3. Remove the center console, seat and rear bolt holding the tank.
4. Cut the cross over hose if you have a replacement and plug. I used golf tees.
5. Lift off the tank and set aside.

removing the tank is easy but you don't need to do it for this job. Just remove the bolts holding the tank and slide it back. Put a block of wood or something similar toprop up the tank while you're getting the plug out.
Disconnect the wires from the plug and run them thru the bars.
(this part sounds fast but usually isn't ...especially if you need to lengthen them)
good luck

I did this on my 07 SuperGlide when I first got it. I started not to remove the tank but found out that it was much easier if I did. Also if you are changing the throttle cables it makes it that much easier to remove and replace them. The only one that you might need some help on is the clutch cable if you have never done it before.
