Default Time for some new cams

Without getting into the gory details, I spent just over 8 1/2 weeks in the hospital with damn covid and i'm currently trying to rebuild myself back to being able to ride again. Doctors say hopefully by spring which is driving me insane, but i'm alive so there's that. With all that time on my hands, I figured it's finally time to throw a set of cams in my '06 Dyna. I've been researching cams for a while and was going to go with the Head Quarters 500-HC but they have retired and closed their shop so i'm back to trying to find the best cams for me...

At the moment I'm trying to decide between the Andrews 21H and 48H. I've read a bit about both but was looking for some real world experiences with them in the TC88. I know that riding style is the main factor in cam choice, so here goes.

I mostly ride solo, but in a group of other bikes. Most of them running a 103, 107, or 110's. Overall speed i'm good with but where I feel it lacks is in the take off after a turn or pulling onto the highway from an on ramp. As well quick snap of the throttle to pass. I end up falling about 4 bike lengths behind now, but can hold it there, usually.

While I'm in there I am going to replace the camplate, oil pump, lifters, pushrode, bearings, etc. I have ordered all of that, just missing the cams themselves now, the only other upgrades I have are some V&H short shorts, an Arlen Ness Big Sucker, and a SE compensator.

Any thoughts which would be the better way to go? 21H or 48H

Add torque inserts into your pipes too... Either cam will be an improvement over what you have now tho..

I've got Andrews 48's in my '07 TC96. I talked to an Andrews guy on the phone before I got them and he told me that they were designed to be like a 21 or 26 but for the newer heads that were on the TC96. You may want to give Andrews a call and see what they have to say. I got the number off their website.

I put the Andrews 21 cams in my 88 and have been happy with them. If low end grunt is your priority you will most likely be happy with them. The 26 cams are similar but shift the rpm range up a bit and have better top end power.

There’s a few good threads in the forum that compare the 2, based on what most people report the bikes with 26 cams won’t pass the 21 until about 80 mph in a drag race.

Speed wise I pretty much hover around 70-80 on regular roads and 90-100 on the highways. So I guess being able to take off and get to those speeds is more important than just all high end. Just allowing me to keep up with the others.

I’m extremely happy with mine (31H)… first mod I did on my bike, probably 13 years ago or so. They put the torque in the right range for my style, and then worked great when I increased my displacement and compression.

EDIT: I know a lot of guys were real happy with the 48H when I was doing my research, but ultimately I decided to go with the 31H for my needs.

That just doesn't sound good at all, I'll bet you were glad to get out of that mess!

Good luck with your bike

it wasn’t fun at all I don’t recommend it. Nothing good about being on a ventilator.

At those speeds you might be better off with the Andrews 26 cams. I’m sure more will chime in, lots of really knowledge people here. Happy hunting!
