Without a whole bunch of attention, I have a wide glide, title in not clean due to a dead owner (dependents and wills I dont know but lets not chance it). No, not signed over. I dont want to jump into that whole ball of stress and legwork.
all I can come with is finding a title
not on a bike on the road. Restamp the vin after welding over the old one and grind flush. Neck replacement welding is too risky as certified welding inspector. Or buy a frame from a fire or something and toss it. Use the title.
Ive heard of the Vermont trick but never really any details that concern me. Nobody knows and nobody has ever done it thats suggested it. I cant even find a way to get the old owners info from the vin.
700 a month for car insurance. No more. I need my glide on the road bad. Going broke.
There is no other way besides getting in touch with the dead individuals family and getting the title legally. End of story. This may sound harsh, but you put yourself in this situation were you WILL have legwork and stress getting this resolved. You may not have the bike in the end. Dont want THAT? Give the bike back and walk away.
Anything else is just scheming, and you may find yourself in legal trouble.

What state are you in and how old is the bike? In some places a bill of sale is as good as a title.
Is the title clean other than the fact that it hasnt been signed over to you? If you know a notary you miiiiight be able to talk him into stamping it for you. Thats pretty much how we do it in Ohio, technically a notary is supposed to be present when its signed over but honestly when is that ever convenient? A bill of sale and knowing a notary usually goes a long way.

No liens, no theft records. I dont have the access anymore to get the ownership particulars to do more research considering one of my bikes registration expired in 1997, Fairly certain its OK plus it was repoed by some less than cordial biker friends of mine who were owed money or something by the person, or performed a service for him, And I know that they would never dare put a fight up on that one.
I am already a felon. Just spent a lot of money I dont want to lose, felt safe enough in my research that it was safe. Just dont wanna get into anyone making a inheritance claim on these things 20 years after the people are dead because they didnt even know they had them. Bill of sale to my friends isnt same as to me.
yep looking for a harmless but creative way to fix a title without a million bucks or weeks of headaches
You do realize the FBI monitors the users on this site?
possibly. Theyd have to be looking for Rico act level activity. One or two vehicles like this is county or state. But thats fine. I havent done anything and this is hearsay til done. Just looking for ideas and theyll get paid one way or the other for tags tax etc. Not trying to title or sell stolen property.
Im already a felon. I can scratch that worry.
Did you realize how many idiots weld titled necks on bikes for this reason?? Literally cut off a wrecked bike or blown one with clean title and amateurly welded onto the new frame. Id rather stamp a vin than ride a bike with 1/16-1/8 thick tubing, butt welded by a harbor freight 110v welding machine enthusiast with .030 wire.
And no you cant paste over the old vin and see it if you weld over top of the numbers because it melts and fills the base metal. Myth. anyways just looking for input ideas but not insult, but thank you!! Most have been insightful and meant well.

Now that you put it that way. No it is not going to happen. You will get caught you will pay a heavy price. 45 years ago you could have. The bike belongs to someone and that is not you at this time. You need to find out who has the right to it an make a deal. Or drop it off at nearest police station. LEO can find out who was the last reg owner in minutes. There is a title on file some where.
Big thing in CA years ago was to steal several of the same cars. Strip them down to nothing but bear frame. Store all the parts. Drop body off on side of the road. Wait. Then buy the body with Vin from recovery auction. Put parts back on and sell it.

It's hard to understand your post but what I'm gathering is you want to find a junk bike with a title and use that VIN number to stamp on your current wide glide, after you grind off the current VIN? Am I understanding that correctly? And if so, how is that not felony VIN tampering?
it probably is. Same as those who weld titled necks from other frames onto other bikes for the same reason. Except I own these bikes. I do not trust existing families of these people though with my money. Both came from an old timer who had em 20 years
If you have legitimate bill of sale, looking into bonded title rules for your state. Not the same as clean title, but it will allow you to register and get insurance. The DMV will look for any theft flags while theyre at it.
