I watched my dad go down a few weeks ago. We were on new blacktop on a wet day and his rear tire just slid out from under him coming to a stop. He only slid about 5 yards and got up without a scratch...
...however, the armored pants he was wearing were worn down to the nub at the thigh and knee pads (with pretty bad 'rug' burns underneath) and his thick riding boot had a small piece of plastic (broken tail lights or something) embedded in it.
I can't imagine what he would have looked like with jeans, let alone shorts.
