Hey everyone, so some of the technicians at the dealership I work at were doing a once over on my bike, just checking a few things I may have missed, and after the road test I was told my exhaust was smelling like gasoline and that I probably need a tune. I have a 2013 FXDBP with high flow air cleaner, thunderheader, and I believe it has cams as well ( also mentioned by multiple techs ) but I haven't installed any cams while owning the bike and our sales department wasn't sure if it had any motor work when the bike was traded in. I was also under the impression that when doing a cam job you NEED to have the bike tuned but maybe that's not the case with twin cams, who knows. NEVERTHELESS I have the newest version of the screamin eagle pro street tuner, I know it isn't the best compared to like a TTS or powercommander or literally anything else but it's what I'm working with. I know there isn't any "specific tune" for my setup so I was going to see if a basemap download would maybe help a bit but this'll be my first time tuning anything at home. I have the harness to connect everything together, and they have a lengthy instruction section on the SE program that I'll watch too, but wanted to see if anybody had any advice on tuning a bike with this tuner? if i should or shouldn't even bother, do's and don'ts maybe? Any kind of help would be much appreciated!
UPDATE: Okay after watching a portion of the instructional videos they give you a link for a basic download seems pretty straight forward, is it actually as simple as it seems or is there more to it that I'm not understanding? haha I'm not a beginner when it comes to doing any sort of work on a harley but i am no expert either and the last thing i need is to plug something in and make the bike worse!
Let's assume it has SE255 cams! because I do notice a lot more low end torque then a stock 103, still not 100% sure but hypothetically with the SE255 what would you do?!

What would I do? I would tear in to it and find out what cam is in there and not guess. Once that is confirmed I would find and load load the base map for your cam, exhaust and air filter.
A stock improved tune will make any OEM Twin Cam bike run better.. but it's not necessary
A Stage I mod (high-flow air cleaner and exhaust) SHOULD be retuned for best performance and to stay safe at the extremes of the tune that are Open Loop...
You NEED to retune when changing cams.... and you NEED to know what cams are in the bike to get a good download map tune...
Running a Stage II mod (bolt-in cams) without a proper tune will cause engine damage... how much and how fast depends on the cams, what tune is in the bike (OEM or Stage I), and riding style....
The only way to get a good tune without finding out exactly what cams are in the bike, is to get a really good, experienced Dyno Operator and have him do a tune from scratch.

If you work at the dealer who took the bike in ask them the previous owners name so you can get all the proper info.. Or a good reputable tuner that uses the Dyno with wide band afr monitoring should have no issue tuning the bike. You just need to find on that uses SEPST..
