The positive battery cable goes to the starter solenoid stud... all my bikes had a rubber cover over that solenoid stud.

Well, at least it does on my '01 FXSTS, '03 FLSTCI, '16 FLHTCU, and my '16 FXDL.....

NOTE: 98hotrodfatboy typed faster than me.... but I included a picture...

The black cable on the copper stud on the starter is your frame ground the red boot goes on the copper stud on the starter. The red tape just below the red rubber boot identifies it as the positive cable from the battery.

Better check that. There should be a heavy wire on there that runs to the main fuse, along with the battery cable in your hand.. I think it should be red, at least it is on my '07. Could that be a red wire under black tubing?

And, yes, there should be a boot on that connection. It's hot, high current and unfused.

Are you sure that's not the main harness positive wire...???

It could be #5 in the pic below.

I believe I also see the #43/44 connector to the starter, from that same harness, attached to the starter below the lug.... as well as the neutral switch wires #54, from that same harness section

OP, in any case it definitely needs to be checked to make sure it's not a ground before connecting the battery cable.....

5/39 is the main power supply to the 40a main fuse and is powered off of the starter lug..
