'07 FXDB Sometimes Won't Start When Hot. Part 2.
Here is the original thread:

So far it's much, much better when the weather was hot! I still get an occasional no start, but not like it used to. Now when it does the no start,I hit the start button, the engine turns for a revolution and then makes like a cough, not a backfire, and I get the stinky gas small as I did before. Then I hit the button again and it may just crank, no start. Then I start to wonder if I need to get out my jump box. I hit the button again and within a rev or two it runs and is idling fine.
I gave it alot of thought as to what could cause this issue. Hot day, a few short hops in the city to the bank, P.O., quicky mart whatever. Last stop is when it acts up. It will also do this if I'm on the freeway for a bit, like a half hour and at my first stop it may act up or wait until the second.
The one thing that I think was in common, was I think I had just filled up the tank. For the city it could have been the evening before. For the freeway it could have been just before getting on. I'm not positive this was the case every time, but it seemed that way.
I'm trying another fix for it, but unfortunately the weather is much cooler now to tell for sure if it fixes the issue. I thought that since it seemed like the engine is flooded, new injectors did not fully help, what else would add fuel. Charcoal canister?? It does catch the vapors from the tank. What if there is also liquid gas going into it? Or it's saturated with gas? It does feed the vapors back into either the TB or the intake manifold, could that cause the engine to be rich?
I disconnected the tank vent and ran the line to under the front of the frame next to the canister. I was hoping to see some gas on the ground. I also plugged the line from the canister to the TB/intake. I have yet to see a puddle of liquid gas under the hose even right after getting gas and a hot engine. But......
I have noticed that under the hose will be some oily like liquid, not thin like gas, it it has been sitting upright on my lift for a few days. It's kinda orangey gold in color. It is definitely from the hose. Smells a bit like gas, but not quite. Not engine oil I'm pretty darn sure, I've run my fingers everywhere on the engine and frame near the hose, nothing, just road dirt. You can put your finger on the hose opening and get this stuff on your finger. Any thoughts on this?????
Because of the cooler weather, the canister fix may or may not be helping. The bike has not acted up lately. When it gets hot around here again, then I might be able to tell?
That's about it for now. Thanks again to all that have helped!

I have not read part 1 .
However , I have the same bike . I had a similar issue . As you know the fuel pump and several fuel lines are inside the fuel tank .
Over time those fuel lines leak . And eventually the stock fuel pump will die .
Anyways replace everything inside the fuel tank .
just my 2 cents

The liquid I noticed coming out of the tank breather tube may have been Lucas Injector cleaner, kinda felt and smelled the same. Stopped using it, seems to be no more goo. Why it would come out of the vent, no idea?????? Maybe it didn't mix when I put the 1oz in??? "Seems" like it happened just after adding the Lucas and not riding it for a day or two???
Now...The bike "may" be fixed. I had an issue with the starter...THAT WAS NOT the compensator.... It acted like the bendix in an old car when it would hit the ring gear when you hit the key again with the engine not fully stopped. It did it when the engine would get one ignition hit, then die. I think the bendix was being kicked out (disconnected from the ring gear on the clutch basket) when it tried to start and my finger was still holding the button down. A friend had a similar issue, but worse. New bendix fixed his issue.
I was all set to buy a bendix on the rain forest river site. I noticed the add for a complete starter. Figured I would take a look. DB Electric (heard good things about them before) all black starter for about $150, well??? Bendix was about $50, not TOO much more. Then noticed that they sell "used" ones. Could have been called that only because it was returned and never used. Bought a few tools "used" and they looked like new, never used.
So for about $75 I bought the new/used starter, figured I would get the bendix latter and fix my original to keep as a spare. So I installed the new starter. WOW, I didn't know the engine would spin that fast. The old one I thought was turning it well, but this one spins it over much faster. Maybe part of the starting issue was due to the starter turning it over slower than it should?
Since I changed the starter, no more hot starting issues. Summer is just about here now, so I'll see how it does as the days get hotter.
So looking back, the engine temp sensor may have been fine? The injectors, still think one may have been getting stuck open, so very worth doing. Taking the evap can out of the loop, not sure. I'll probably reconnect the hoses latter this summer and see. Still may remove it completely?? Starter has definitely made it crank much faster. The starter is supposed to be the same power as a stock one.
Hopefully no more hot start issues!!!! Thanks to all that helped!!!
