Book says on jiffy stand and you're not supposed to thread the dipstick in. I am spot on the full mark using this procedure.
I'm getting a small amount of gear oil from the vent after a hard ride (interstate, 6th gear at 70-80mph). It's happened twice since I drained and refilled gearbox after changing the clutch cable.
On my Road Glide, the FSM says to thread it in lightly when checking...if i did that on the FXD, I would be overfilled substantially right now and this would make sense...
Err...umm...I may have found the answer myself. It seems that vent line is the other end of the fuel tank vent tube. What looks like gear oil (thick and sticky) could be some version of gasoline that has been chemically altered on its way through the tube??? Anyone heard of this?
I do not trust dipstics. I always measure fluid amounts using quantities called for in the service manual. My eyes cant see fluid on the dipstick when it's clean.
Unless someone changed it and put a longer tube in, that is not the trans vent.
Agreed. My FSM just calls it a vent line but i have determined that it is the same line that comes from under the fuel tank console and has the inline check valve at the steering neck.

That little tube is clean and intact right next to my starter. No sign of anything leaking out of it.
I have attached what I believe to be the answer. These both came from Yamaha sportbike websites, but i would imagine it applies here. They claim that water condenses inside the fuel tank vent tube and mixes with gas that has broken down due to heat and becomes a jelly-like substance that drips from the tube and makes people think its oil...
