thanksthere were a bunch of us on here years ago doing the FL Softail front end modification. Then Harley came out with the FLD switchbacksome say Harley people saw our bikes and stole the idea! 😎
LOL I betcha you're right! It looks great, I like your version better then the switchback?
I ended up buying a forward control version (no mid control hole) in wrinkle black with a few defects for 80 bucks shipped. That way I kill two birds with one stone (remove the mid control) and allows me to strip the finish but without downtime. I'll strip and polish the wrinkle black and still be able to ride, then swap when it's ready so the least amount of downtime possible and no more stupid mid control!
wont you need to replace the inner primary too? The tunnel would have to be sealed against the outer primary cover or youre going to leak primary fluid.
won’t you need to replace the inner primary too? The ‘tunnel’ would have to be sealed against the outer primary cover or you’re going to leak primary fluid.
Yeah but I can seal it, I've seen others do it and it's just for now. I also plan to replace the inner primary in time but I'll seal it for now.
I also found this kit, BUT I am not 100% sure it will work with an inner mid-shift (with hole) and an outer forward shift (without hole) primaries, but I will give figure it out. either way, I plan to do the inner primary as well as it wont really match otherwise (and I am way to OCD for that)
My primary will be here today (overnight somehow), but I wasn't really expecting it that quickly. The guy I bought it from, shipped UPS and is located in Delaware so it came overnight. I'm out of state until Monday visiting my son for Christmas so I went ahead and just bought the plug kit. Apparently, this is made for my exact bike and year to do exactly what I need to plug/seal off the inner primary when moving to forward control (removing the inner shift). The plug won't be here for a week so that works out perfectly with timing (plus who knows the weather). I rode yesterday (55 degrees) but it's gonna get cold and snowy again, but I can still prepare the primary and then in a week or two, swap it over. I did a bunch of research after the comment was noted about the inner primary (because I didn't think of that) so I'm glad it was mentioned!
Thank you everyone for your input, assistance, and pictures! I'll upload pics as I proceed with updates, but I can finally get rid of the grey!

Well that was a helluva lot easier then I was expecting, I first tested the 'inspection cover' (which is solid now) and that was easy peasy. So I glopped it all over, and let it sit for an hour and used a paper towel to wipe off. I'm on hold because of the temperature (North Jersey 30sh minutes from NYC), so it's down to the teens at times. But first round took off the majority, and the manual labor so far has been 15/20 minutes to wipe off the paint and stripper glop. It took far longer to clean up then the stripper took, I was expecting to be wiping a lot or cleaning more, but this stuff took it right off. The cool thing was that a few times, the gloves melted and I didn't even feel it or know (but I immediately scrubbed up when I did notice) just in case. They melted twice in 15 minutes but overall, no problems so far. I'll resume tomorrow and finish the strip then begin polishing up the aluminum.
BTW, no I didn't use the scraper, that was all I had to lather it on, but I didn't scratch the aluminum and went gentle and sideways with the scraper and goop:

Round 2, this time I hit the corners and then gave it a good bath with warm water and soap after the removal. I needed to see what's actually left to remove but not stuck on with the paint remover (but actually removed). Almost done, a few holes and few high spots to hit but I should finish with the next round then I can begin to polish it up:
