Nice. Your Uncle knows his stuff. Welding cast aluminum is tricky. Heat moves stuff around and it doesn't come or go back.
I would dry fit that cover back on without a gasket to see how flat that surface is. Make sure it doesn't rock and finger tighten it and check for any drastic short length gaps with a .002 feeler gage.
May need to use a film of Permetex RTV black on both sides of the gasket now.
Just a film so none gets loose inside. I snug up and let it dry before rolling that fine hair thin bead you may see off the seam.

I'd replace them.. I pulled the trap door on a 5 speed that way and 20000 miles later both went bad. IIRC the 6 speeds may have deeper groove bearing to handle the axial thrusts but depending on how you RnR the plate you can damage them..
