Default Help with Engine ID Decode - Scratching Head.....

Hello. First post and I need help as I am stumped trying to decode my engine. I can not find any information on the web and no decode information is coming back that matches the engine numbers.

A little history. I bought this Harley 2 months ago. It is a 2002 FXDWG3 Dyna Wide Glide CVO model with the Screamin Eagle 110 heads. When I bought the bike, the previous owner told me that the engine was replaced about 9k miles ago but that was all the information he had on it.

I need parts and to make sure I get the right ones, I need the engine information. So a search for the engine number took place and I found 3 numbers. The numbers are pin coded so I thought perhaps it was a S&S crate engine but S&S tech support claims that all 3 numbers are not theirs and that if it was an S&S, it would be stamped at alot of places that it could not be missed. Thus, it must be a Harley engine....but none of the numbers work on the Harley search tool to identify the engine.

The location of the numbers and the numbers are:

Right side just aft of oil filter head - 0770915598

Left side on the transmission case just past the bottom of the transmission cover - 09028549

Left side between the bottom of the cylinder housings - *GM49305475*

I believe the third number that starts with the star is the engine ID number. The engine is married to a 6 speed transmission which makes it a post 2006 transmission. The 9 would indicate that the engine is post 2009. The 4 would indicate a Twin Cam 88 engine - if I am piecing the numbers correctly.

Any help is appreciated for all the info I can get on this engine.

How about a pic of the whole motor? Both sides.

The EIN (engine identification number) is the "GM49305475" number on the left side of the engine, between the base of the cylinders on the engine case.

"GM" = model - FXDI (Super Glide)
"4" = engine code - 1584 ESPFI (96" EFI)
"9" = date code - 2009
"305474" = last 6 digits on the VIN the frame the engine was shipped from the factory in.

Your engine number seems to fit the 2009 vin decoder for a FXD

GM = FXD 4 = Twin Cam 96 9 = 2009

This has to be a crate engine as the engine last 6 do not match the VIN last 6 of 953288. I guess it could be a take off but the Black/Silver scheme of the engine was reserved for the CVO models.

Also this is a carburetor engine not ESPFI. I'd be lucky if it was a Electronic Sequential Port Fuel Injected engine. Of course that just means more stuff to go wrong on it.

The 1584 CC Air Cooled Twin Cam, is that with or without the SE 110 heads? I tried to find numbers on the SE heads and cylinder casing but could not find anything.

I just could not find the GM info. But I was pretty sure about the 4 and 9 coding. Now to find all the info I can on this engine.

I thought you posted the bike was repowered, and the pictures you posted are on the engine from an unknown source, or did I misunderstand?

The last six numbers "305474" of the engine identification number, are supposed to match the last 6 numbers of the VIN on the frame of the bike the engine was installed in at the factory. If they are on an engine in a repowered bike, they won't match that repowered bike's frame VIN.

Since the EIN is on the cases, and this is a custom application of that engine, IMHO, there is no way to say if the heads, cylinders or any other engine component, came from the factory on that engine...

All I can say for sure, is that the cases on that engine in the picture, came from a 2009 Harley Super Glide that was delivered from the factory with a 96" EFI engine and had the last six of its frame VIN as
"305474". Anything else on that engine could be from any other compatible source.

FWIW... a 2002 Twin Cam Delphi EFI ECM, will not be able to control a 2009 Twin Cam Delphi EFI system. There are too many EFI upgrades between those years, namely, they went from an all open loop tune, to a partial open loop and partial closed loop tune with O2 sensor feedback.

To use a 2009 Twin Cam EFI engine in a 2002 Twin Cam bike, you would need to use a 2009 ECM and add the appropriate sensors, or convert the EFI engine to a carb, to match the 2022 ICM or an aftermarket ICM.

On another possible issue I see...

Where are the last six VIN of "953288" that you posted..?

Are the last six of a VIN "953288" that you posted, from a Twin Cam frame VIN? Also, are you sure the last six numbers you posted are correct?

Per a Harley-Davidson Member Relations Representative, a Twin Cam engine identification number where the last 6 numbers begin with a number "9", indicates a crate engine, sold off-the-shelf from the factory.. The following 5 numbers would then be the "serial number" of the crate engine.

Per that crate engine number designation information, there should be no Twin Cam bikes with a last 6 numbers of the frame VIN starting with the number "9".

It's possible I got bad info about the crate engine designation, as I got that 2nd hand from a fellow forum member.

I hope this information helps....

You got it right. The current engine, the one in the pictures, is the replacement engine form the Twin Can 88 engine that originally was on the bike. I was told that the engine was replaced at some time but the last owner had no information on it except "the engine was replaced about 7K miles ago".

As it is a repowered bike, I knew that the last 6 numbers would not match the VIN stamped on the frame as the engines were two different engines, thus 2 different ID numbers.

I do understand that there is no certain way to tell if some of the engine parts on the repower engine came from the original. Thats one of the reasons that I am trying to find out everything I can about the replacement engine.

There are no EFI sensors on the replacement engine. This is a carburated engine. I have the 2002 FXDWG3 shop manual and this replacement engine is as close to 2002 stock. Thrre are no electronic upgrades that I have been able to find.

The last 6 numbers of the VIN came from the stamped VIN on the right side frame of the bike. They are also the numbers on the title and registration.

Again, thanks for all your help.

That engine number says that the engine was born as a 96" EFI engine in 2009.

IIRC, the 2002 CVO bikes was the last year they had the same engine as the base models, just a bunch of other goodies and cool paint.

If my memory is correct, and this is just a guess, possibly the 96" engine was used for the bottom end, and a bunch of the 2002 OEM parts were swapped over to it (ie: heads, maybe pistons, intake manual, carb, etc.) to simplify the swap, by turning it into a carb bike.

That engine, as born, would have had a bigger stroke than the OEM 88" engine n your bike as OEM. So if they used the bottom end of the motor, with a bunch of the 2002 components, it now has a bigger stroke. You would have a 96" 2002 FXDWG3 CVO Screamin Eagle...

Again, just a guess. I wish you luck figuring out exactly what you have... Sounds like a fun bike none the less...

Enjoy the new bike...

PS- Thanks for sharing the info on your frame VIN. That pretty much invalidates the info I was given (again, 2nd hand info... ) about the crate number identifier on a Twin Cam engine identification number. I'll have to stop sharing that info until I get a chance to find out the scoop first hand... I hate it when I accidentally share poor/bad info.
