Default New (to me) Dyna Wide Glide

Hi All,
While I can't say I'm new to the forum, I am new to Dynas and it's been 20 years since I've posted on the HD forum.

I'm quite an old fart who grew up riding everything from Whizzers and Cushmans through a gammit of British and Japanese sport bikes, GoldWings and a Sportster. I recently refurbished my old 73 XLH 1000 and a K1 CB750 that I bought new in 1971. As I get older and the GL1500 got heavier, the freshened up Sportster and Honda 750 were to be my go to rides for 2025. While these two bikes are complete opposites in every respect, I still love riding both of them.

EDIT: Added pic.

And then my neighbor gave me a like new 2008 105th Anniversary "Duracell Coppertop" FXDWG Wide Glide with a mere 10,000 miles. Other than a fancy HD Speedo/Tach upgrade and a custom alligator seat, the Wide Glide is bone stock.

My neighbor bought the bike for his father who soon determined he could no longer ride. It's been sitting for about 5 years and my neighbor told me, "If you'll ride it, you can have it!" The only attached string is, when I'm done with it or can no longer ride myself, I'll give it back to him.

I've put about 100 miles on the bike, and while I've never been keen on choppers, hi bars or raked front ends, with the stock bars pulled back to a more comfortable reach and height, this Wide Glide is really growing on me. The forward (only) controls have taken some getting used to; but I'm already feeling more comfortable with that.

With that said, I'm wondering if anyone has... or if there's any reason not to... add a set of mid position rider pegs from another Dyna model. From what I can tell, looking at the bike, the WG frame appears to be drilled (and tapped?) for the mid position footrests with what looks to be rubber (?) plugs sealing up the unused holes.

If all that's true, I would think all the mid position footrest parts for other Dyna models, should bolt right on to a stock WG. But can anyone tell me if dual brake and shift controls, (both mid & forward), would be achievable with HD parts or reasonably modified HD parts. I wouldn't want to do anything that couldn't readily be returned to stock.

Thanks!

I have never done that particular mod, but I switched mid controls to forward controls on a '16 Low Rider.

Per the HD Online OEM parts finder, both frames look to be the same past the neck. The Wide Glide has a 34° rake while the Low Rider of the same year has a 29° rake.

They both have the same mid foot peg mount holes on the frame.

I have seen, and read about, people using forward controls, with mid pegs for a different foot position. Most had mid controls first and switched to forward controls,

I believe the mid foot peg mounts from the same year would do what you want, but you may need to grind off the left side mount brake pedal mount.

Also, check to make sure there is no exhaust obstruction issue. If you have aftermarket exhaust headers, check their fitment guide to make sure they don't say they will not work with mid controls. Barring that warning, I would be willing to spend the money to try the mod you are considering. Maybe look for the parts on eBay. it is usually cheaper than new OEM HD parts, but you'd be surprised sometimes what people on eBay are asking for prices. Always check to be sure the eBay parts aren't more $$ than new..

Good luck with your mod, and keep us posted on how it ends up...

Thanks for your thoughtful reply, hattitude!
I actually thought the exhaust was all stock. Does the picture I posted show otherwise?

I think I need to do a deep dive into the parts book to see what non-wide glide parts I need and then see what I can scrounge up. I'm not too familiar with the different Dyna models... but, other than the rake, is the Low Rider the closest Dyna to the Wide Glide but has mid footrests and controls?

The exhaust is stock but the wide glide only came with forward controls. Other Dynas with mid controls typically had a cutout on the heat shield for the mid control.

If you end up wanting to change the bars, ones from a Sportster Roadster are very comfortable and good looking too, sort of a flat track look...have them on my Sportster and Dyna.
You might be able to work out a swap for mid controls here. You also might need different primary cases to have a mid control shifter which would complicate matters.

yeah the mid control bracket comes over the pipe. It probably won’t rub, but if it does you can pick up a heat shield on eBay.

another consideration would be Dyna rider footboards available on Amazon for under $150 with the 15% off. You can stretch out and drag your feet back to more of a mid position.

I've gone from forward to mid controls on my 97 WG. Fairly easy to do and nothing special was needed - other than an inner primary with the hole/passage for the mid control.

Edit: I passed on using the plastic sleeve that goes through the primaries for an aluminum one from Vulcan Engineering.

If you like mid controls you’d be better off going to mids and using a set of highway pegs in the forward position.
This is how my Dyna Convertible is set up and it’s the best of both worlds IMO.
It should be a simple bolt on job as most Dyna parts are interchangeable.

That bike has the best color combo from the MOCO IMHO. Especially with chrome. Beautiful bike.
