Glad you're OK. Lot of good take aways from that experience.
Had my share of hairy situations, never laid the bike down intentionally, to this day I dunno if that was luck or split second instinct.
One time I had the bike removed out from under me, didnt have much say in that....
I think the "laid it down" crowd are those afraid to really use the front brake. Why folks are afraid to use the brake which does 75% of the work baffles me.

I had a student many years ago who actually told me that while learning to ride, his father told him to NEVER use the front brake unless he wanted to crash. I couldn't believe it. I spent almost two days with this guy trying to teach him to lay off the rear brake pedal (he was constantly locking up the rear wheel) and instead apply gradual front brake lever....
I was shocked. I couldn't believe anyone would actually say that, but there we were, leaving skid marks with the rear wheel at every stop.....

Its more common than you'd imagine. I used to hear it all the time.
While growing up, I had a kid tell me his dad told him not to use it unless he wanted to be thrown over the handlebars.

After watching training videos I am working on using mine less. I am lazy and use a lot of front brake
Just this week a neighbor put his young teenager on a horse to ride up the street. Kid was alone with no clue and the horse just wandering. If a group of loud bikes went past, Im sure one or more of them would spook and who knows.
I effort to remember public streets are open to many variables: 40 years of cars/trucks, critters domestic or wild and people educated with a bit of common sense and our solipsistic instagram class.
