They are not hard to install. The layout time is much greater than the actual installation time. You are right. There are screws that go through the top of the bag. They are black sister screws (2 part screws). The bottom part of the screw has a screwdriver slot and goesinside of the bag and the top part of the screw is smooth topped and looks like a stud or rivet and is the part that goes outside of the bag.

I will try to get a shot for you if you need it but if you look at the shot that shows the lock assembly on the front of the bag, you can see what the top part of the screw looks like. There are 4 screws that hold the lock assembly to the front of the bag and they show up in that shot (3rd picture)If you decide to do this, I will be glad to talk you through it.

I have used Barebacks Quick connect for about a year and love them. very clean when the bags are off and very secure when the bags are on. They are not lockable however.
