Wouldn't have been cheaper to just use gray or red primer????????
Probably. Harley's literature when they introduced the demin paint said they were trying to recreate the old beater bikes (they used a better sounding term, but I forget it) that baby boomer guys used to Frankenstein together when they were kids and couldn't afford Harleys out of a showroom. Now, grown up and well-heeled, they can afford to pay Harley prices but want a bit of nostalgia. Thus showroom primer coat. Clearly they know it's not a durable finish because they literature also went on to say it was supposed to wear "like denim" in places that got a lot of rubbing.
It's not a bad concept and there are some pretty bikes with that finish. I'm the right age group and background, but I like shiny.
I guess I'm not on Harleys "wavelength" on denim paint. On some parts I can see flat black, but not the tank and fenders on a brand new bike. What next? Here' we'll tap a few nice dents in the tank for ya, and crack the speedo lens and tail light. Maybe let it sit outside for a few months so it gets some bird poo on it, then we'll put a dull clearcoat over that too, so it'll always look nice and dirty (OK, BAD and dirty). Hell for an extra 50 bucks we'll put somewear and tearinto the seat. It'l look so bad it'll be beautiful!
NEW Ultra Slimeball Edition (tm):
All nylon wire ties removed and replaced with electrical tape.
Handlebar grips replaced with-----electrical tape
Gas caps replaced with wadded up red shop towels
New tires replaced with old worn tires we think were ordered from JC Whitney in 1977
"Sorry 'bout That!" (tm) bent handlebars.
Electrical system modified: Most connectors chopped off and replaced with individual "ScotchLok (tm)" brand connectors, then sprayed liberally with saltwater, for those interesting late night riding failures you CAN'T GET on a truely "NEW" motorcycle. "Torch and Melted (tm)" Appearance Group and "Mouse Nest Pak (tm)" available at extra cost.
Mismatched Mirror Group with "Corrosion-Look (tm)" finish.
As I posted in another thread; I got mine yesterday. Black denim, which I wasn't so interested in at first. I put a deposit on a vivid black unit coming in soon. After checking it out a couple times, though, it grew on me - mostly thinking that with 5 kids I won't have to worry about a few finger prints here or there annoying me. Great ride, the position is new for me always having ridden mid pegs, but is so comfortable I am not sure I'll ever go back to mids.
The black isn't so bad (doesn't remind me of gray or red primer, anyways).
It's a different look, I'm just having some fun with it. If I get one I'm thinking of the dark blue pearl. I just think a new bike should be glossy,or at least not look primered!
I just bought a red fat bob this past saturday. I haven't "announced" it yet because i havent had time to take pictures....i didnt want to get the ol "this thread is worthless without pictures" thing....so ill try to post some pictures sometime this week....
