i have a 2007 fxd with 12500 miles..i had a transmission seal go out...my guess is that it is because the belt was too tight..had the dealer adjust the belt at 10000 and he did 3/8 while on the stand...when the belt got hot it was as tight as a banjo string...after the new seal i had him adjust on the loose side and i think it will be ok..i have asked a couple wrenches if the belt tightens when hot and they say no...i have the only one that does i guess..i think the 96 is a great motor..

My 08 dyna belt gets tighter after a summer temperature run. I atribute it to rear sprocket being aluminum.
Man!!!...how the heck you got over 12K miles on an '07? What did you do...ride round-trip 'cross country a few times already?
Bought a 07 1200 sportster in Jan 07,put 9000mi on it and traded for an 07 Low Rider with 2800 on it in April 07,it now has 10000 mi on it.Thats 15000 this year with temps not warming up very early here in IND.Took a loss on the trade but love the LR.
By the way have not been over 200 mile away from the home twenty.
I think you need a new indy. Unless someone really buries their tach into the red zone the bottom end should stay happy, as long as the engine is ran with Motorcycle spec synthetic oil. ( The bigger the engine, the hotter it will run.) Synthetics can take the load and heat.
