Default Dealer blowing smoke???

Hi guys, new member here. I have an '07 FXD that Iam thinking of changing out the stock mufflers. Great bike but I can't even hear it running when I ride with friends.
Anyway, went to the local dealer yesterday ( Northwest HD in Lacey) and was told that I also need to add a race tuner as Harley will not remap anything past an '06. Sounds like BS to me but I thought I would check here and get some more opinions.
Am thinking of going with the V&H straightshot slip-ons for now and maybe later on adding a better flowing air cleaner...maybe then I'll need a power commander but I would prefer to just have the dealer remap the stock magic box.

I have a 07 and I installed a set of Cycle Shack slip-ons.
Bike runs fine with no remap. You will need to do a PC III
or SERT when you change the air cleaner to a high flow.

You do not need a remap for just slip-ons.

Oh, and welcome to the Dyna forum.[sm=welcomesign.gif]

Dealer is full of shiite. Of the four dealers near Greensboro, NC, three will still do the install and one won't. The one that won't do it is merely trying to sell an HD SERT (HD's race tuner ... the highest price unit out there). That's what yours is doing. He is a 'stealer'. Ditch him.

I had the Screaming Eagle Stage 1 download done a couple weeks ago and with the SEII slip-ons and Mobil 1 V-Twin synthetic oil the bike is running noticeably cooler and noticeably snappier past 2500 rpm. I feel all the '08s are set up way too lean due to EPA regs and they all need the download, even if using the stock pipes.

If you're just going to install slip-ons and a hi-flow air cleaner, all you really need is the download. It works fine. If you want to play around with mapping or will do more engine work, then get one of the fuel controllers.

Question. Why not go ahead and get either a SERT or a PCIII? I can say you will be happy you did. My runs so much cooler and much, much better after doing so.

I just purchasd my first HD. 2008 Street Bob Crimson Denim. I wanted to upgrade the pipes and the dealer is suggesting V&H with a race tuner kit and new A/C. My concern is the paperwork shows these pipes are for 91 to 06 Dyna's. The dealer says it's a computor problem and the slip-ons are good for the 08. They are staggered pipes model 1801-0111.

I posted this in an ealrier thread yesterday, I didn't get a reply but I did go back and question the dealer again. They say the A/C and race tuner will add more power and eliminate poping and backfire through the pipes. They have a salesmen there with the same set-up and his sounds very good

I got the occasional decel backfire before going to Stage 1. The download at $149 plus $40 labor fixed this ... never get 'em now. I also have a much harder pulling and cooler-running motor, and I get the same instantaneous starting I always got.

The same cannot be said of the folks I know who got PCIIIs or SERTs. Everyone I know personally who went this route (for significantly more money, btw) wound up spending even more money ona dyno tune to get the deceleration popping dialed all the way out and they also start a little harder than before. There are posts here from folks who experienced the same thing, so it's not a local phenomenon Sometimes they go on and work perfectly, once set with factory suggestions. But often they don't, and they take some work to dial in.

Like I said ... if you just want better pipes and an air cleaner for a better-breathing, harder-pulling, cooler-sounding (and cooler-running) bike, and you don't wanna tinker with it ... get the Stage 1 download done.

But if you're going to add other things like a hotter cam or maybe some top-end work, etc. go ahead and spring for a fuel optimizer and dyno tune. Or if you just like to tinker with your scooter (and it IS fun) get a PCIII or FuelPak or SERT.

I have a 2008 Heritage, and when I say HOT I mean hot, was how the bike ran before doing an exhaust, breather, and SERT upgrade, as well as the better oil Amsoil 20w50. Now the bike performs 200% better, and will probably lasta lot longer with the dropped engine temps, and by using a better oil. These new bikes need to be cooled down or they will never go the distance like their predecessors. But from what I'm hearing Harley will void the warranty on anything NOT stock. I honestly don't care, I'd rather have the performance, and a bike that will last longer than their OEM junk. Besides, they don't have much warranty to start with, and Harley will fight youtooth an nail to deny warranty claims.

Thanks for the input folks. Only plans for now are an easier breathing motor with exhaust first and eventually a different air cleaner, leaning toward the "big sucker" at this time. Wanna keep it simple.
Already running syntetic oil and don't really have problems with heat ( as long as I keep moving ).
