I think I was having a conflict with the check engine light coming on with them in.

This statement is not correct... or at least it mis-leading.
"all platinum plugs are pregapped and not to be adjusted"
Plugs do come pre-gapped, but the same plugs can be used for many engines, and the required gap is not the same. Today I called NGK to ask why their Iridium plugs come with instructions that clearly say, "Do not gap these plugs". Their answer was, we've had customers that change the gap by putting pressure on the centre electrode, and these new electrodes crack or break with such pressure. The tip cracks off... gets damaged... doesn't work properly.
So, to prevent damage by those who do not know how to gap a plug correctly, NGK puts that message on their packaging.
This was the answer from both NGK USA and NGK Canada (I called both). NGK Canada, referred me to a link that describes the correct way to gap a plug. And, with no reservations, NGK Canada Tech Support advised that yes, indeed, all plugs should be gapped to the engine manufacture's specifications.
I have gapped my new NGK Iridium plugs to .40", as per my HD bike's spec.
I suggest that all do their own research, but wanted to share what I've learned today.
