Explain the Differences in Dyna Models
ORIGINAL: wlbowers
I know I didn't address the difference of the models. Thats why I say go to the dealer and look. Any one in there will tell you the differences.
Then you have to decide which dream to live.

My mechanic is trying to talk me into changing over my front end on my FXD to a Wide Glide front end. He says with bars, cables and the front end he could get it all done for around 1000 to 1200 dollars. Don't think you want to transport the bike all the way to Indiana though.

I noticed you kept the stock 4" speedo on the bars. I just bought an 06 and I'm thinking about the smaller 2' speedo and mounting kit ( #74607-05 and 67434-04). Does the stock speedo make the road difficult to see?

While we're on this subject, let me ask a question. I have an '05 FXDI (Base model Super Glide) and I really love it, however everytime I go to the dealer, I keep looking at the tanks on the Low Rider with the speedo, tach and fuel guage on them.
Anybody have any idea as to cost and work involved to switch tanks and guages? Since my bike is Vivid Black, I don't see where matching the paint would be a problem.
Also, where would be the best place to look for the tank if it is feasible to do? Thanks, Art

I got the FXDI "base" model. Just recently ordered SEII slip ons, SERT, and Stage I kit. I'm keeping my fingers crossed that the Dyno can dial everything in. There is so much threads about the new dyna's and what/who to use for the mods. Being a new HD owner it can be a little nerve racking!![sm=icon_rock.gif]

I hate that speedo in my face. I have the vivid black also, and noticed a vivid FXDB. It had the speedo and fuel gauge on top of the tank. The low rider has the tach as well. Not interested in a tach so much, but who knows. As far as cost and where to get one at a good price?.......??????

I think everyone's taste in motorcycles is so different...and that's what makes the harleys so great. There is so much variety. I bought an 06 Wide Glide. I have always liked this style...steep rake, apehanger bars, bobtail fender, stock sissy bar...etc. That's just me. It is essentially the same as any other Dyna...just styled a little different...and probably handles a little differently because of the rake of the front end.
I think my decision to buy an FXDWG probably has to do with what motorcycle first made an impression on me as a kid. In the late 70's early 80's, (when I was at a very impressionable age) this style was very popular. Even when the Japanese makers started to enter the cruiser market they tried to emulate it...remember some of the first Honda Shadows had this style?
More recently, the popularity of the more traditional 50's style bikes is probably making an altogether different impression on kids now. I will always be partial to the chopped style motorcycles...that doesn't mean that I don't appreciate different styles. The Springer and Heritage softails are beautiful...I love the new Street Bob. And I especially love the new Street Glide, and would have probably purchased it if there was no Wide Glide model. All of these models are much different than what I bought. The best part is, it doesn't matter what you buy, because harley (and the aftermarket) offers so many accessories, no bike is exactly the same once they leave the dealer.

The main thing is the frame. FXD and FXDX have a 28 degree frame, FXDL and FXDWG have a 32 degree frame. Those specs have been around since the FXR models were released in 1984. I'm pretty sure the 06 models all use the same frame apart from the Streetbob which is different ( I think). As far as I know pretty much all parts are interchangeable between different models ie. you can make an FXD look like an FXDWG or an FXDL using the right combination of parts. Putting Lowrider tanks on a Superglide should'nt present any problems as far as I can see.
...ummm... pardon me for not being an expert.... but can't you just change out the console instead of the entire tank? Again, I'm not sure, but my guess would be that it's just a plug-in switch out....
You'd probably want to get a dealer to write a certification letter as to the mileage though, just as a CYA if you sell at some point.
