That was really the only part I didnt think I would want to change. Figured it would be ok mounted on the bars. But now that I have 6" risers and drag bars I dont really like it much. It's ok up there but ot what I would prefer.

could you have found a bar that puts your hands in the same position without the risers? Unless you just have to have the riser and drag bar look I would think you could have gone to a 4 inch rise bar (using stock risers) and been in the same hand position without the odd looks of the riser mounted spedometer. I think it might look like the way a nightster or 1200r looks like in that regard.
Dunno, I have always liked the feel of drag bars and straight risers. Had em on every cruiser I have ever owned. Just like the feel of being straight over the top of the trees I guess. Even though, I am pretty sure you get the exact same amount of control with these drags or the stock bars on this bike. It just feels right to me. My buddy told me the other day that it was kind of an ugly look, so I told him not to put em on his bike then! The guage is kinda ugly but the feel is "just right" for me so I guess I gotta keep it that way till I decide to buy another tank setup. thought about dong some 50's style hot rod type flames anyway, so maybe I can find a deal on a tank-have it painted- then put the guage on the tank at that point. Was gonna take it off completely but the wife got kinda pissed about that. Said I would get to many speeding ticketsthat way.

I think it's safe to say that the FXD should only be bought if that's all you can afford. Any of the other Dynas will come with addons that would be much more to buy later than up-front... even just getting the FXD to ride two up is about $400 in parts plus labour if you do it yourself, of course you would not be putting the 2-up stuff on if you were not planning on using it, so then you need a sissy bar too, which will run you up a little more.
No offense to anyone, but I could never see myself buying an FXD...I don't really like the Silver powder-coated engine (even with crome over it I prefere the black or the chromed black, but that's just my opinion), it looks pretty much like a beefy sportster, without any finish.
If money were tight I would probably get one of the nicer 1200 Sporties. In my mind the FXD is just not an attractive bike.
This is a big purchase. If you are planning on keeping the bike for a while, all teh Dynas are about the same price, within a couple thousand of eachother, wait until you can afford the difference...
Don't end up with something you don't really want and regretting it later. In my mind I can't imagine owning an FXD for long without either selling and moving up, or blowig too much ca$h to make it something I could have bought in the first place for less...
To many of us, (myself included) enjoy modding our bikes as much as riding them. You would not want a bike that someone else rode for you everyday. I don't want a bike that someone else (in this case HD) customized for me. I like having the base model for that reason. In my eyes the beauty of a bike is more in it's lines (frame, wheels, angles) than in shiny add ones. To me the fxd, fxdc, fxdl, and street bobby are THE SAME BIKE. Just different little touches. My bike has street bob, fxdc, and lowrider parts on it anyway as well as some aftermarket stuff. I wish I had bought something diferent every now and then... but that wouldn't change with any bike I bought.
I happen to like my silver engine, thank you very much. I could just as easily give you @#$% about your "sportie" looking mag wheels but I like you and your bike too much.
Your Silver engine looks great, I was talking about all those OTHER silver engines. No, I think they look fine and nice chromed, I don't like the naked silver look though. Nothing wronge with the beefed up Sporty either, but, you could get, IMHO, a much nicer looking "Beefed up" sporty for that price, you could take an XL 1200 up to 1350 or whatever they do for that...
The FXD just does not seem like allot of bang for the buck... I just get the feeling most people buy them because they don't want to wait just a little longer till they can afford what they really want.

Not a safe statement at all. I bought the FXD as a "blank canvas", so to speak. I looked at the custom, and saw a lot of things I liked. I also saw a lot of things I would change. I couldn't see spending a lot of money on parts I was going to discard.
For example, the wheels. Since I ride in the outback a lot, I wanted tubeless wheels, no spokes. Much easier to repair on the side of the road. I would have had to spend at least $1K just to change the wheels. And that's using stock take offs from a FXD.
I probably ended up spending more than a Custom would cost to make the changes I wanted. But Now I have a bike set up exactly the way I wanted, and saved money to boot.
I do agree about the engine, though. The silver looks OK, but the black looks better.
