When one of my brothers bought his FXD, it was to build a hot 95" with a bit of a genuine old school look...when we did the bigger bore we had the cylinders powder coated "cast black". After it was done people would ask him how he got a street bob when they were not yet available (we built it a year before)
To answer your original question with the FXDC you get a more traditional Harley looking "Fat Bob" type tank along with a tank mounted speedo and tank mounted ignition switch. Also you get spoke wheels and lots of chrome for a great price!!! With the FXD you get mag wheels and a smaller looking tank and less chrome.
When I bought mine I thought about a FXD, FXDC and a FXLR. I was out on the FXD because of the tank and bar mounted speedo, just not Harley enough for me. I was also reluctant to spend the extra on the FXLR because I could not justify spending the extra on all I could tell at the time was an added tach on the tank. So I went with the FXDC because I loved the tank, chrome and the price! Glad I did!!!! Thatâs my 2 cents worth!!
I got the FXD. Why? I did not like the tank mounted gages, wire wheels, or the chrome. I wanted to add to my bike as I wanted. If you get the custom, then be satisfied with the seat and the foot pegs. But if you want to to get your own seat & pegs, then the FXD. The choice is up to you. I went in to buy an Eltra-Glide and decided I like the silver FXD the best. It wasn't about money. I'm still happy with my decision and I've seen a lot of scoots. Mine fits me and you'll have to decide what fits you best.
I bought the FXD because Iknew I would change everything about itand I like to work on my bike almost as much as riding it, money was not an issue in the decision, I've already spent so much on upgrades that puts it my FXD way beyond any other Dyna pricewise, but that's what I wanted to do, because I have fun doing it. It's not an economical way to do it, but I get great satisfaction out of transforming my bike into something that's mine alone. Every time I add a bit of chrome, or some other goody that makes it a little different or faster or better handling,I step back and admire the bike, hop on it and go for a ride, come back and admire what I did for the 10th time andsip a cold beer and think life does not get any better than this. For me it's all about making my bike("maddie") mine, if I bought a bike with everything on it and did not change stuff it would not be mine. The process of transformation is priceless to me. Granted a stock FXD is not the prettiest bike out there, but that's what I wanted, a bike waiting to be transformed and personalized. Some will understand this and some won't, by the time I'm done it would have been cheaper to buy an FXDSE, but then it wouldn't be "maddie"and it's never been about money anyway.Peace.
Good luck with your DAYNA, who makes that by the way?? I've heard that those come with automatic transmissions and cruise control as standard options. Post pictures if you end up with a DAYNA
I like the FXD, FXDC, FXDL, FXDWG, Buy what you like and fits your budget I bought FXDC #1 that was the only bike in Black Pearl #2 Iwas sure I would wind up buying 2 up seat pass pegs #3 I like larger tank and console no keys in fork except to lock.#4 I do like additional chrome However like everybody else I have spent a lot of time and money on up grades and this will happen no matter what bike you buy and no matter what you say when you are buying it.No matter what decision you make you will loveit thats why we are here.Good Luck Ride Safe
FXD is, for a basic HD, the best bang for the buck ~ depending on your reason for buying the bike. I prefer speedo and tach on the handlebars, I prefer mags to spokes, I like the plain silver engineand the stock 2 up HD seats suck. Bottom line ~ most of the differences, other than instrumention location, are cosmetic ~ and there ain't no tellin' about which style will appeal to whom.
I was looking at the Fat Bob, but a close friend of mine said if it were him, he would buy the less expensive SuperGlide FDX with the solid wheels (no tube). I had no problem with the solo seat - I don't plan on riding two-up. Also, it left a lot of room for customizing, which is part of the fun. And the Pewter Pearl looks awesome with the gray motor.
Interesting, I would prefer no tubes and spokes for sure. But getting the extra chrome with the stock bike is a plus for sure. As this will be my first BIG bike my plans are conservative (I'm also being watched carefully by the wife). Money is not a problem but is always in the equation so I'll admit that upfront. However, I'm not the guy who can spend nights and all weekend in the garage so the extras included with the FXDC appeal to me a great deal..
Time to call my saleman with a few more questions - thanks!
