Does anyone here know of a issue with the primary case cover leaking on a 2001 FXDL?
Mine onlyhas 7K miles on it and has developed a minute leak. What is weird about the leak is it only occurs after the bike has been running for a couple of hours. Drops a few tear drops of oil and then thats it. Weather/engine heat related?
Mine did the same thing at around 5K on 2002 FXDXT. It was the shifter shaft which goes through the primary ABOVE the oil level. Bad seal on the side facing the engine. The one or two drops of oil runs down to the low spot on the primary and drips off in a spot about 5 inches behind the actual leak. It was covered under warranty for me since I had 2 days left on the extended warranty!!!
You may be able to confirm it by feeling for some oil running down the back side of the case. Good luck.
Ya know i remember a few people talking about that problem on FXD models 2001-2002. I am gonna check the exact location then.. Ring ring goews the phone to the dealership 5 miles away.
Probably is temperature related. As oil heats up, it gets runnier and most likely finds a crack or open spot in the gasket, allowing it to seep out. You didn't say whether you're running dino oil or synthetic but the results should be no different. May want to try cleaning around the entire primary and going for a short ride just to see if you can pinpoint the area of the leak a little better. I'd also try tightening the primary bolts in sequence according to the factory manual.
