ORIGINAL: Sec Super Glide

Now I do not know if a factory re map will keep up with four pipe changes to get the correct sound, air cleaner change. and now a new set of plugs and wires, and yes I will have to re adjust for that.
A re-map won't unless you want to pay for a new one after each change, but SERT will, that's why SERT is a good option. Plus it resides outside your bike and tweaks the bike's computer settings from your PC, then you unplug it. It's able to change a multitude of parameters that I believe are unavailable to some of the other fuel management systems that are permanently attached downstream of the bike's computer.

the revtech/techlusion DFO has four pots that are adjustable to just about any settings. when you get the kit there are instructions as to how to set the initial adjustments accordingto your build from stock to stage 3 motor w/no downloads to stage 3 motor w/ downloads. yes there are disadvantages, can't adjust timing for the cams. I have had one on my 05 fxdli and it just like adjusting a carb, except it's adjusting the Injectors opening impulse/duration. just my 2 cents. ride safe.

Holy Cow!!! Lots of great information bro's!!!

In thinking about setting up an appointment with my dealer, I believe the SERT was what they referred to for $469.00 HOWEVER, I do specifically recall saying..."so the $469.00 is for the SERT?" And the girl said..."the what?" I said, "the Screamin' Eagle Race Tuner," and she said..."no...we use a different kind of module..." which right there I should have asked to speak with the service manager, but I just remained confused, made the appointment, then hung up went...."wait just a second here...!" In all fairness, maybe there is a brand new tuner out there that we all have not heard of yet. But I tend to doubt it.

So basically after reading everything, taking a look at my manual, talking to a rep from Vance and Hines, as well as a long-time HD tech it seems that the reality is that there is really NO wrong way to do a Stage I so long as you :

1) Change the A/C to a hi-flow type
2) Change your stock pipes with an exhaust that allows more airflow out - slip-ons keep it real simple
3) Adjust the EFI system electronically with a fuel management device made by a "reputable" manufacturer, OR by the dealer for anywhere from 150 to almost a grand depending on what you are looking to gain and do in the future.

H-D's SERT has a lot of good things in it, but really, unless you are radically changing your set-up, or going beyond a simple Stage I now or plan to in the future, how many parameters really need adjusting for just a bit more air flow in and out?

V&H states that their own "FuelPak" was designed and tested with their own exhausts utilizing the HD SE air filters. At a couple hundred bucks one time cost, and a do-it yourself install and set-up so easy a monkey (with really good dexterity) could do it, how can you justify HD doing anything to your bike for their costs and labor rates?

I can't say if this has really dmamged my trust in my local dealer, but it didn't do it any favors either. There is another, smaller dealer a litle farther, but a really nice ride from here...I think they may get my next major purchase.

Thanks again for all the "IMHO's" and the experienced advise.

I use the Rev Tech DFO so I can re adjust for every change .
It must be allot different than the one I had, it was non adjustable from 0 to 3K the stock FI was supposed to handle that.It didn't work with the Thunderheader and SE air cleaner I had.So I got a SERT the DFO for me was just a waste of $250 before I spent another $500 on a SERT.I heard that they were making some improvements to the design and I would eventually maybe be able to get an upgrade but I was sick of listening to it pop and backfire evey time I rolled off the throttle.I wasn't going to take any chances, so I got a SERT and had it dyno tuned by some one who knew what they were doing, I've been very happy with it ever since.
