Default Hints for our trip?

Maybe it's a little bit early to ask this kind of things but here we go anyway:

We're (me and my girlfriend) planning to visit Maine and New Hampshire in august 2008. The plan is that we will visit my friend who is living in Maine and we will rent a bike for a week. With the bikewe are planning to rideacross the Maine and New Hampshire area. Lake Winnipesaukee would be nice toride around...? I've heard that roads there are popular among bikers? We have lakes also in Finland(app. 200000...), but this particular one isn't here.

So it would be nice to here from you guys some good hints where to visit! I would appreciate that a lot! We would appreciate even more if someone could be our guide, for example for a day. That would be really great, because its nice toride with nice people.

And 'cause we are Finnish, it would nice to know some good bars in Maine and New Hampshire... Few beers(or more)after riding all day, tastes really great![sm=icon_guiness.gif]

Thanks in advance to everyone who shows some interest to this matter![sm=smiley20.gif]

If I were you, I'd post this question in the "Northeast" section of this forum. Read my "Best sceneic roads in NH (leaving from MA)"thread & send aPM to robandlyn & oldhippie. These 2 guys are not only from NH, but knoweverything there is to knowabout New Hampshire as well. It's really a beautiful state & I'm sure you'll have some great ridin' experiences. Gonna definately do some ridin' up there next year as well. I'm about an hour from the MA/NH border.

I have ridden many miles in that area. The lake is great andRoute 1is a great cruising highway. You should visit Weirs Beach. That is the area that host the oldest motorcycle rally in the U.S. Laconia. in Laconia NH. I have cruised New Hamphshire, Maine and Vermont as well as Upstate New York. In my opinion one of the best motorcyle touring areas in this great United States. You will have no problems finding watering holes in this part of the U.S. and great people.

Aika - I live in NH (southwestern part) and have ridden many of the NH, Maine and VT roads (don't leave VT out if you have the time). You can really accomplish a lot in a week around here without ever getting on the major interstate hiways, but do take your time. Some ideas:

I'm sure your friend in Maine knows where to go, but in the mid-coast area make a point of taking the road south of Bath to Popham Beach in Phippsburg for a day. Further south along rt 1 are tons of great beaches but far more commercialized and crowded. A bit further up the coast is Bar Harbor and some great roads around Mt Desert Island. Also when heading to NH from Maine, a nice non-hiway route is rt 26 to rt 2. Actually, there aren't any east/west hiways into NH, so most any road is cool!

This will bring you into the White Mtns of NH and from there you can head to the Kangamangus Hiway (2 lane up thru the mtns not to be missed) from North Conway to Lincoln, then cut down to tour around Lake Winnepesaukee. I live in the Monadnock area of NH and there are some great roads around here before getting to VT.

When heading over to VT think about taking rt 100 in VT (north/south midstate) to get a glimpse of the Green Mtns and great small New England villages.

Just be aware that weekends up this way in the summer tend to be clogged with tourists, so traffic can be slow. And no helmet laws in NH + Maine.

Some good dealers I know or have heard about include Monadanock HD (Keene NH area), Heritage (Concord NH area), Meredith HD in NH, and one in Barre VT. There are lots more all over the place.

Not sure where I'll be in August, but shoot me an email when the time gets closer and maybe we can hook up.

Good Luck - you'll have a great time!
Chip

Thanks, Ian and Chip! And everybody else too![sm=smiley20.gif]
I willkeep you informedabout the exact date when we are flying over there.

I have visited Maine (and Boston) 1994. Then we drove with my friends car up to Canada. That was just great! I'm really looking forward next summer even more. Too bad that I can't take my own bike with me...Although I know that some guys fromFinlandhas done that. I've heard that the shipping is cheaper than renting a bike for a month or so....

Thanks again!
And here I am. Picture was taken last summer when we were making a little road trip in southern Finland. And the beer is Velkopopovický. Maybe the best there is.... http://i234.photobucket.com/albums/e...06/Kuva036.jpg
