I'm gonna be fitting some short shots to my 2008 bob soon, I know about the oxygen sensors but what is the component on the stock back pipe?
it looks like some kind of valve, and does it have to go back on the short shot pipe.
I can't see it mentioned in the instructions anywhwere.
That will be the first one with anything like that I've seen. I am wondering if it is something the Aussies requiredto get it across the waters from the US.
That is the solenoid valve which diverts the exhaust gas flow during certain throttle/roadspeed combos to quieten it down for the Euro III fly-by noise test. It is fitted to HDI models for Europe and Australasia.
Search around on the internet and you will find a guy in Oz who sells plug-in gizmo's which allow you to disconnect/remove this valve (and the one in your air intake) so that you don't start throwing error codes everywhere when you disconnect.
Its a bypass valve fitted to export models. In order to pass EU exhaust laws, silencers are very quite, as you all know. The laws say at 3000 rpm it should be 93db, and testwith a drive by(could be a bit wrong here, check the sticker on the frame) so Harley fit this to open up the restriction once revs go above this. It is also connected to a sensor in the air filter. Rev your bike and watch it work.
I recently fitted V&H Shortshot staggered , which does away with the active exhaust valve you mention. It,s an easy job, simply disconnectthe cable to the valve and remove with the exhaust system. You will however need (as walter says) to plug a gizmo into the electrical socket that feeds the valve, this tricks theelectrics so you don,t get a fault code on your instruments. There is a similar electrical gizmo that plugs into the back of the air cleaner which i assume you will upgrade to stage 1 to run with the pipes. The Vance & Hines Fuel Pak No.V61005A comes with these 2 electrical plugs / gizmos for the European market, you should check with the V&Hguys by e-mail if you are considering one.
