Default Hel-looo Fatty! (1st post)

Howdy everyone!

Long-time lurker, first time poster here. After 20 bike-less years, I finally decided that a bike's in order again ... agonized over which scoot to get for months, started out with looking at the Nighster, decided I needed something a bit more comfortable and went for the Super Glide, changed my mind again 'cause I fell in love with the tank-mounted speedo on the Custom and ended up ordering a (black denim) Fat Bob today! If all goes well, the lil' bastard should arrive sometime next week (damn, I can't wait!!).

Secondly, I need to get a big, fat "Thank you guys" off my chest ... without this forum I'd have known nothing about the bikes (It'll be my first H-D, after all), surely would've paid way too much or might even have ended up buying the wrong bike!

And lastly, I got two questions ... the bike will have to remain "stock" for the first couple of months, but as soon as the "bike-fund" is refilled, I've got to get rid of that bobtail fender in favor of one that looks more like the Street Bob's rear fender. Anyone done this and/or have any info as to how much such a mod may cost? 2nd question ... this might sound stupid, but how do you guys secure your bikes when you're out and about? Any additional locks at all, brake disc lock, big fat chain + padlock, all of the above? When it comes to buying a lock, should I stick with the "established" brands like Kryptonite? What's your experience/recommendation?

Thanks for the input - Kraut

Hey i'm sure i saw brand new "Denim Black" fender that would fit, on E Bay yesterday, if it's gone they crop up all the time. After that you would have to get the fender struts, signal kit, tail lightand registration plate.

Welcome! Great choice on bike. I would have gotten one also but they weren't out. Like Lone said they are on ebay all the time. I just bought a Vivid black with struts for 129.00. Good luck

Locks, what are those? I have very full coverage insurance. If they want it, I'll get to start on another. Welcome to the H-D family.

I put a long D lockaround the front forks/through the wheel and another on the rear axle attatched to a chain, anything to deter the chancers buta pro outfit will have it away with your prized possession, no problem.

Locks won't stop a group of 4 guys with a van. Get a lock that is easily portable that will inconvenience a "casual' thief, i.e. disc brake lock. You won't use one for longthat's not easily transported. Let the spending begin. Gratz.

Howdy, Welcome, asnd Congratulations. You should be able to find a fender, possibly even before you take delivery, if you really wanted to have one. As for locks, you'll only scare off the rookies. Real theives will still take your scooter. 4 dedicated men with a couple lengths of pipe and she's gone. Oh, yeah, we must have pics upon delivery...
BTW, I had to check out this post with a subject like "Hel-loo Fatty"

Thanks much for the welcome, guys! Originally, the intention was to wait with my first post until I got the bike and a few pics to post, but the anticipation's been killing me ever since I came back from ordering the bike at the stealer's this morning. The wife's already convinced I've gone off the deep end ... she mumbled something about: "putting on the helmet and running a couple of laps in the driveway, to cool off"

Oh, I'd love to. I had no clue the Street Bob's fender would fit without modification ... alas, it'll have to wait. My initial "bike-budget" was around 11 large for a Nightster with V+H Short Shots, I kinda overran that by about 5 grand with my ordering the Fat Bob, LOL. Methinks I'll come up with some sort of a wish list of goodies (fender, grips, risers, pipes, passenger equipment, etc.) and then see what models/makes I like best, since for now, aside from V+H, the only source I know of is the H-D catalog ... I got tons to learn.

Lock-wise, I think I'll go with a somewhat sturdy D/U-lock and a disc lock ... in combination with the Bob's security system, that should keep away most parasites. And as you guys said, no keeping the pro's from taking it if they really want it.

Thanks for all the great tips!!

Oh ... another question, since I've never ridden a bike in the US (me = semi-freshly imported Kraut) ... do bikers here greet each other when riding down the road? In Germany it's customary to sorta lift the clutch-hand ... sounds weird, I know but I've been wondering about that one for weeks ...
