Default Moving!

Ok, this is probably in the wrong forum but I don't really venture out of the Dyna area so I will ask it here. Whats the skinny on shipping a bike. Has anyone ever done it, if so what are thehassels? I will be moving across the country next year and I do not have a way to transport my bike! I could get a hitch put on to my economy car and get one of thoes carriers that tie the fronttire off to the hitch but I don't want to put 2700 miles of wear on the rear tire. Thanks for your help.

Ron

P.S. Pig in a blanket, if you catch this post I have a GREAT story for you at our next meet up! (note the sarcasm)

If you ship it with a freight line, make sure you put it in a very sturdy crate (make sure the top is strong...they will stack on top of it!). Also, put the highest amount of freight insurance on there they will allow.

P.S. Buy some aspirin and sleeping pills also. It'll be hard to sleep, worring about your baby 'till she arrives unharmed (we hope).

Very good advice from Jackyl, probably the better way to go.

Lots of motorcycle shipping companies online. Fairly easy to get a quote. Don't know exactly where from and where to, but you are probably looking at $1000 or so. Also, go for a crate and not a pallet. Get insurance. If you plan to tow it, check the tow rating on your compact car. No point in ruining a transmission to save a few bucks. You could also rent a U-Haul and secure the bike properly, or pull it on a U-Haul motorcycle trailer.

I think I would do that Jackyl but I drive an Aveo5 hatchback. I don't know if I could tote a bike abd trailer cross country and not blow that little engine. Bobby, I have already invested in stock with the Advil company, Melitonin is cheap so I am not too worried there... Thanks guys.

you can get someone to transport it in a trailer for probably a grand or more. Or, if you really want to ship it, go to a harley dealer, tell them you would like a crate a new bike came out of. Its a good wood frame, has a place to mount your front forks too, then you can just have it shipped regular frieght for 300-400 bucks. I used to give crates to people back when I worked at a dealer for that reason. All you'll do it remove the front wheel, bolt it in the crate and make sure all the fluids are empty.

Dorkman, I was thinking about the Uhaul route but that is expensive, I guess I won't get around that at all. Not a bad idea dklozik, now all I would have to do is talk one of thoes guys into giving me a box!

Just go in and talk to someone in service, that way they can make sure the set up guy doesnt destroy the crate while upacking. They should just give it to you, since all they do is throw them away. Tell them your situation, shouldnt be any big deal.

This is simple. Tow the Aveo with your Harley!
