As far as what the most common type is, I guess it depends on what you like. I see alot of guys with 16's, which is what I went with. Although one of my clubmates went with 18's.
I have 14's and went with 2 in risers... this will give you an idea... i did not swap cables but i did have to rebend the brake line... I made my own risers... see the $50 mod thread going around for a how to...

I just took my stock bob bars off and went with a fatter 13" ape. I might later install 3" risers. I feel the 13" fit the bike much better with all my other mods.
I put 13" apes on my FXD. This was a pretty nice increase from the stock buckhorns. I also like my bars rolled forward so it does give an appearance of being slightly taller than they are.
Seems the most common ape height is 16" but I was'nt into the idea of my hands being above my shoulders all the time.
