Default Question: Attitude/Sissy Bars

Hello All,

I know there are a ton of posts on this stuff, but, after about a 1/2 hour of reading, I still couldn't find my answer. So, I'm hoping you guys can help me out here. My Street Bob deserves one of those old school attitude sticks - the simple black metal triangular-shaped rods. I ride strictly solo and have no intentions of using it to support my lady. I just want one 1) for looks and 2) to tie down stuff.

Questions: [ol][*]Do any of you know of any that can mount up to stock strut hardware?[*]If not, without my own fabrication (out of the question), what do I need to accomodate most of the ones I see online without spending hundreds of dollars on the mounting hardware?[/ol]
Thanks in advance...

The obvious BEST solution is to have the Harley "quick-detatchable" set-up, but it ain't cheap. The installation is pretty straight-forward.......you remove the rear fender attaching hardware and install the stud for the quick-detachable sissy bar. Harley makes a ton of different designs of sissy bars in various styles and heights, with or without pads.

I personally hate the looks of a sissy bar, but I have one for the old lady or the rare occassions that she rides with me. I also hate saddle bags and I have a set of home-madehard bags that also attach to the same quick-detachable studs. But the old lady can't go anywhere that she doesn't take 40 lbs of stuff with her.

You can see my scoot with and without the sissy bar at the photo site in my signature below.

Good luck on your decision......a sissy-bar is a personal thing and no two bikers think the same on the subject.

Whiff - Ya might want to check these guys out, depending on how "stylish" and high ya want to go:

Mild:
www.khromewerks.com

Wild:
http://stores.ebay.com/JD-Custom-Fabrication

I didn't search around their sites much, but a call to either ought to give you the answer for what hardware you'd need for their products. Likely will work with the harley supports, but I could be wrong!

Try a metal/welding shop around your h-town. They always have some scrap ornamental iron/metal pieces lying around and could fab you up something quick and fairly cheap. Or if you have an artisian complex around (here in Atlantawe have a fewof those) some metal workingartist might make you one up..Good Luck.

You can get a used rigid sideplate off ebay pretty cheap, usually. Try to get one of the older ones that has the triangular shaped cut out in the upright.Look at a side shot in my gallery and you'll see the one I'm talking about. It looks a lot better than the solid one and is still plenty strong. Believe me if they didn't fail with some of the sweathogs I've had on my bike they are not gonna fail.

You can modify the side plates easily to make them quick to get off and on. The front bolt is no problem just loosen it and slide the sideplate in. The problem is the rear bolt hole. It's hard to get the bolt out without the tire out of the way. The solution is to use a hacksaw and file and slot out the rear bolt hole on the slide plate straight down the same width as the bolt hole, then slightly enlarge the wire slot to make it easier to slide the sideplate down. That way you can just loosen the rear bolt a bit and drop the sideplate in without having to take the bolt all the way out. Can't send pics from work, try to post one tonite to show what I'm talking about.

Cyclevisions has some nice sissybars if you don't want to have one made.

Good Luck

Tom
